| Censored Version | The game is known to have been released in two different versions: the original single release, and the version included into the compilation Super Hits From Microdeal. At the moment, the possibility that the version present in the compilation had already been used in the single release cannot be definitely ruled out.
Original release The disassembled code of the single release's version shows several text which has been left by the assembler program used by the author. Among that text, at memory location $274F, lies the text 'CBM IS TRASH'. There was also a reader's letter on this subject in Commodore User 25, page 8, with an explanation from Steve Bak: "That assembler is absolute trash. There so many things wrong with it, I spent four hours trying to work out why Cuthbert kept crashing when I was writing it because of that thing". The existence of the censored version as alternative single release, later also used in the compilation, is proven.
Due to the still missing dump of the original tape, it's only possible to guess and speculate about it. The hack which has been commonly spread during the years – both in packed and unpacked form – looks like a pretty dirty crack of the game badly saved till $3FFE, which moreover shows a BASIC starting line with the word 'AIRIA' pointing at $1179 (SYS4473) instead of the expected $1100 (SYS4352). According to the three known Italian hacks which can be considered as independent each other (a fourth hack is actually a recrack of one of those three), the game should indeed start at $1100, as verified in all the cases. There is a good chance that the original program started at address $1100, without the aid of a starting BASIC line, addressed by the loader itself.
Compilation re-release The offending text at $274F has been removed. The main program actually starts at $1100, run by the turbo loader, and it fills the memory up to $3F00, where the remaining area has to be later used by the game itself. |
