I don't agree here. The 1541 and 1541 have only one optical sensor to see if the write protect notch of a disk is open or not. The same signal is also used to create a logical disk change signal, but this sensor can not be used as a disk present signal. There is no index hole sensor, and there is also no track 1 sensor (except in some 1541Cs).
Of course, if that sensor is bad, the drive might think the disk is write protected and return a write protect error (enter PRINT DS$ to check).
