I never ever got in to Elite to be honest. I was more in to Mercenary when it came to wire frame games, only because that was what we had on Plus/4 back in the day. 
I enjoyed Darkstar One on XBOX360 a number of years back though which was more or less a clone of Elite with modern day GFX.

I played one entire summer holiday every day, all day when at primary school. I finally faced the fact that I'll never be 'elite' and school started in September. 
Paul (not yet of gotu that time) reportedly did the same.

I was more Mercenary than Elite too. Never knew quite what to do in Elite.
I got quite far in Mercenary though. I think I might have used tips to complete it.

Today I again wondered if it's ever mentioned anywhere that the game is bugged (only on plus4?) and elite rating cannot be achieved, only "deadly"? Anyone tried to debug it?
Maybe this info should be added to the game page(s)?

I took the game apart completely in 2009 and did some very detailed write-ups (all secret missions, how the "6553.4" credits mentioned on most other places is wrong, why the tribbles don't show up, 17th galaxy easter eggs, etc).
You can find them all on the Elite +4 page.
"Elite" ranking works, enter >4E1 19 (or any higher number) and press 8. It's very difficult to get that high number via regular gameplay.

I played during an entire summer back in the days, I got the RIGHT ON COMMANDER message dozens of times, still I remained Deadly. Well I guess an indicator of some sort would have come in handy.

If you read it, I think it's fair to say that at this point Elite has no more secrets
I guess printing the "kills" value would have solved that (though seeing that cold hard numerical value would have taken away some of the "mystery"). In the odd chance that you have an emulator snapshot (or some other form of save) from that state, you can check that 16-bit value on >4E0 to see how far you were.

There were definitely no emulators when I played with it, it was in 1989 I guess. But I might still have the cassette with the save games. It would be fun to fire up my iron and load these to check the memory. I became quite curious how far I was from elite ranking if it's really reachable. Back in the days all my friends concluded that the program is faulty because noone was able to reach elite, though we played A LOT with it.
