Clean the contact strips on the Plus4 board on the back. They do build up crud and oxides (even if they look shiny and clean). Use alcohol and a swab to clean both sides. Then use a strip of clean typing paper to wipe and genlty buff the contact strips. Removing the crud has fixed more "bad" interface connections on the 1551 and Datassette connectors than you can shake a stick at...

@Patrick: 1) With all devices turned off, detach the cartridge-connector from back of Plus4, clean its contacts (and port contacts on Plus4) 2) Reinsert the cartridge-cable as well 3) Turn on the 1551 and wait until the red LED turns off 4) Turn on the Plus4 and wait until the 1551' motor tuns off 5) Insert a *surely* good disk (well working in a 1541 for example) 6) Type DIRECTORY or [F3]
Wait for your reply, then we can proceed with more tests. Bye

Clean the disk drive head. While you're at it, lubricate the rails that the head mechanism ride on. The 1551 is constructed similarly to the 1541 so any guide on how to do these for the 1541 would be suitable.
In short, the 1551 is either misreading (or can't read) the sync bytes of the header for track18 sector 0. Therefore the 1551 thinks it has bad data or a bad disk.
Alternately, the ground (earth) line could be bad. Do other earthed appliances or electronics work in this outlet or with this power cord? (Another 1551, a 1541, a 128D?)

Does the disk drive light blink? If so, how many times, or continuously?
If you have a continuously blinking drive light, type PRINT DS$ and the drive will tell you what the problem is.
I suspect the disk is missing, not formatted, inserted upside down, or the directory is not readable for some reason. The computer goes to READY when the drive releases the bus, whether the computer receives any information from it or not.
