The cable I currently use is a self-built XE1541, with detachable adaptors to convert it to an XM1541 or a parallel cable (XEP1541/XMP1541), the reason being so that I could still use it for both cbm4win and mnib (which required different cables at the time, and I was unable to get the parts for an XA1541)

I also use self-built cables, but not the original X1541 one... that has been modified to an "XE1541" years ago, as I usually don't have a PC around me whose parallel port would still be compatible with the original one anymore. And for SC, it is nice (for sure), but not for multitasking environments... I slowly started to hate keeping a minimal Windows 98 setup for the sole purpose of transferring d64 images. The last time I used SC, I remember having booted up from a FreeDos CD... and then decided to reconsider if I could still get opencbm to work somehow .

Probably I'm the only one who uses his own 13 years old selfsoldered X1541 on XP with StarCommander.

I use that stuff regularly under Linux... was not especially happy about its first appearance, had to create udev rules by hand, but after that, it worked reliably. I use no gui with it, btw.

Indeed, the new version of GUI is good IMO reliable and faster. I'm sure Gaia is referring to first version.
BTW a new version of Cbm4win is under testing and I can assure you all that it is even faster. Main feature of it is the support of many CBM devices linked (making possible to leave the X-cable connected while you are using Plus4).

Do you also use the newest versions?
CBM4WIN v0.4.0. : http://www.trikaliotis.net/cbm4win#v0_4_0
GUI4CBM4WIN v0.6.5. : http://blog.paytonbyrd.com/?p=89
In the meantime, some bugs were already repaired...

Yeah the GUI is _very_ buggy (and ugly, too). Simple things like changing directories don't work reliably. This is a real pity. I wonder how hard it would be to make a good one (or improve this)...

But there are functions in the GUI that do these operations as well

cbm4win is my favorite tool too. sadly it lacks the newer DOS commands like "scratch" or "header".

Hiya,
Cbm4win combined with a XM1541 cable works brilliantly with xp/2000. I use it all the time and its so much more convienent than using star commander and booting in dos.

cbm4win requires an XA or XM cable, not a flat X1541 cable.
