Re: SHOULD COMMODORE MAKE A NEW PLUS 4 PC?

@Bernardo -- checking the US Trademark database at www.uspto.gov reveals:

a. "Commodore" is owned by C=HOLDINGS B.V. Last renewed June 2013, this renewal is good for 10 years (until 2023). TESS serial number 73360490. Other companies have tried to register "Commodore" for telephones or computer accessories, but these registrations were not granted by the USPTO, possibly because C= Holdings (or a previous owner) claimed prior registration.

b. "Amiga" is owned by AMIGA, INC. Last renewed September 2006 and valid for 10 years (until 2016). TESS serial number 73571532. I see that several other companies have tried to register the Amiga logo (slightly different font, "Amiga Forever", etc) but these registrations were not granted by the USPTO, possibly because Amiga Inc (or a previous owner) claimed prior registration.

These trademark registrations are only valid for the US. It is possible that others own these marks in Canada, UK, Europe, or Japan.

For those outside the US: trademarks here are registered on a "product line" basis. One must state the applicable product lines (computers and accessories, office furniture, etc) when registering their mark. Other companies may register that same name for a different use, such as boat motors or hats. Which means that I could sell a "Coke" brand adding machine without infringing on Coca-Cola's trademark. wink

Re: SHOULD COMMODORE MAKE A NEW PLUS 4 PC?

OFF
It does not look bad at all. The built in touchpad is a really good feature.
As I understand it was more a "paperware" than a real macine you could buy.

But even then there are three big problems with the machine:
1) Atom. Atom is anything but fluent experience. Yeah, it eats only few watts, but it costs customer experience.
According to my point, any Celerons or cheap Pentiums are much better. Except you run on battery.

2) The built-in Intel VGA.
None of the Intel built in VGAs have perfect driver for 3d. Yeah, they have the market share, but not the real satisfied user base. Weak drivers very frequently result not starting or buggy 3d gameplay. Or just slow. Recently turned out, that even if the graphics core developer made a better driver and sent it to Intel (intel GMA3000), Intel just does not care, did not release it. "Buy a newer one!" What a nice Customer oriented concept
I have an Intel 820 range SSD cause intermittent freeze of the computer when certain files or folders accessed. I mean sometimes frozen for minutes! Intel knows it since >1 year4 no solution provided.

3) Not upgradeable
Yeah, even if t has sealed in CPU, the VGA should have been upgradeable. It is not the case here, and not the case in any all-in-one machine. there COULD be some a possibities (like the MXM VGA cards or PCI-e riser or PCI-e flex riser cable) but none of them utilized in this machine.
From one aspect it is a faithful reproduction what C16 was (almost no expandability), but hey, it is a PC. You buy it, and after 2-3 years it found to be a dead end with no potential lifetime extension.

(as a comparison: into my 8 years old (!) shuttle SN95G5 I bought over the years 2 gb faster RAMS, better AGP VGA, dual core Opteron180 and an SSD (instead of the original A64 3000+, 1gb RAM, older VGA).
While it seems to be crazy efforts, for most of the tasks (yes, even rare gaming) this 8 years old AGP system still OK, except the Intel ssd it is rock solid, and cost less than half if I would buy in every 2-3 years a new PC, althogh the result would be a faster PC.

Correct. What is unclear is who now owns the Commodore and Amiga brand names.

Not the best idea. They were only really just producing low-end PC's leeching off the Commodore name. A C16 version was in the planning stages once.

The only specs we know of is a 6Ghz Dual Core Atom. Touchpad and built in CD/DVD. Again it was an all in one machine that you could just hook upto the monitor or TV. I admit it does look like rather nice. But AFAIK no prototypes were actually built.

Sadly the owner of the new company died fairly recently. RIP. Commodore USA has now ceased to be which probably comes as no surprise.

Re: SHOULD COMMODORE MAKE A NEW PLUS 4 PC?

I'd like to put the question by comparing original automobiles with their nowadays successors (or what is being called successors):

Besides of the brand, what is in common with the

- Austin Mini Cooper / BMW Mini

- Volkswagen Käfer ("Beetle") / New Beetle

- 1967 FIAT Cinquecento / 2014 Fiat C.C.

??

There's nothing what could take an oldtimer friend's fancy for the actual model, and vice versa.

I doubt that we must have another joke like the "New C64".

What we really need is some hardware replacements for our stuff, i.e. 8360, 8501, etc., to keep our babies alive.

They shouldn't have done the "C64" in the first place.

Sorry to bother you commodore69, but could you please decrease the amount of using all capitals in your posts. It is a bit unpleasant for the eyes.

SHOULD COMMODORE MAKE A NEW PLUS 4 PC?

The new COMMODORE company has made a pc with a C64 case and can play c64 games so should they make a PLUS 4 that does the same thing?
