Re: GEOS 3.53: New Distribution For PLUS/4 And C16 With 64KB!

@Baz: it's on one of my hard drives. I took it offline when I realized it was seeing over 99% webcrawler and spambot traffic.... hard to justify the hosting cost for the 2 or 3 humans who were still visiting. :/

Every program I was involved in, other than GEOS, is now hosted here. While SVS and I still share distribution rights for GEOS 3.5, we don't have authority to allow it to be downloadable elsewhere. But either of us can supply a disk image to anyone who asks by email. wink

Coincidentally, does anyone know where www.CBM264.com has gone? A member asked over on the commodore16.com site on THIS article blog near only a couple of weeks back

Re: GEOS 3.53: New Distribution For PLUS/4 And C16 With 64KB!

@MMS: if I remember correctly (and I might be thinking of a different GEOS128 ROM setup), all the GEOS ROM does is copy GEOS128 executable code into the 128's Bank 1 RAM.

Once this is done, GEOS128 runs exactly like it were loaded from disk, so the disk reads/writes are the same after this point.

Since each user has a different setup (disk drives, printer, desktop color, etc) some configuration is required before burning the GEOS ROM. This is why one needs to configure to the intended "boot" drive, compress the boot files, and then copy into RAM before burning. (The link you provided has some preconfigured ROMs for those who don't use multiple drives, printers, GEOram, etc.)

Also (again from memory) this requires a bootable GEOS128 disk in the drive when the 128 is turned on -- this is to verify that the user has a valid GEOS128 license; a copy-protection measure.

As the 128's internal function ROM is 32KB, same as the Plus/4's, it is theoretically possible to create GEOS 3.5 ROMs using a similar procedure. I don't know that it would be worth the effort other than the novelty of having it, since YAPE (and possibly other emulators) should be able to "snapshot" your running GEOS 3.5 setup and reload it another day. happy

Re: GEOS 3.53: New Distribution For PLUS/4 And C16 With 64KB!

@MMS: GEOS can manage till 4 disk unities (only 2 1551s the Plus/4 version).
Probably this (C64) version tests if are present the config files inside one designed disk, and load them (if not present, it can set default).

Re: GEOS 3.53: New Distribution For PLUS/4 And C16 With 64KB!

Hm, an interesting topic, starting the GEOS FROM ROM.

ftp://8bitfiles.net/archives/geos-archive/GEOS-ROM/GEOSROM-Toolkit/README.txt

Thinking further: how much the geOS WRITE and how much it READs from the floppy disc?

Was there any chance to create such a GEOS version may not able to save settings, etc, but could purely run from ROM (256KB one) and loose settings at switch off? or keeping the settings at a small continuously powered RAM. (and may able to save to cassettes too, haha! grin )

Re: GEOS 3.53: New Distribution For PLUS/4 And C16 With 64KB!

@SVS:

a) Color changes, and he added GeoWrite and GeoPaint. He also changed the pointer to an arrow.
b) They work in YAPE 1.0.4 on 1551 CPU emulation. I did not try a real machine.
c) It *is* your English version, from before we arranged distribution rights. (Your unique translation exists in his, not even a spelling difference. If he had translated independently of yours, he would have translated GeoWrite and GeoPaint as well.)

Essentially he copied the pre-cbm264.com versions to blank disks, made a few cosmetic changes, renamed the disk, and released it as his own version.

Re: GEOS 3.53: New Distribution For PLUS/4 And C16 With 64KB!

@EPA:
Even if all we appreciate your enthusiasm for Plus4 and GEOS related software, please specify:

a) What is new in "your" version? What are the EPA files added to the D64 GEOS images?
b) Why the images do not boot, but output protection error message?
c) The English version seems terribly similar to my English version; or am I wrong?

Thank you for your kind replies.

Re: GEOS 3.53: New Distribution For PLUS/4 And C16 With 64KB!

Regarding Plus/4 mouse a page I started to write today, hopefully you will find answers, and maybe some motivation to help the project with device driver programming or PRG hacking (Multibotticelli, Botticelli, Microillustrator and GEOS in my mind)

http://my.opera.com/MMSZoli/albums/show.dml?id=11886182

Feel free to comment. a new GEOS release would be a great target to implement this important feature.
Please let me know if any progress on NST SID Card 1351/Amiga mouse support (driver)

It looks like a big joke. I can only download one D64 image. Where's the second?

Sorry, every time: Systemfehler nahe $90AC, under Yape 1.0.2 and drive #8 as 1551 CPU emulation.
What is wrong?

GEOS 3.53: New Distribution For PLUS/4 And C16 With 64KB!

Hi guys!

I found the GEOS 3.53 distribution with 8 D64 images, which I will call the "little distribution". Then I also found the "big one" with much more D64 images. So I decided to work me through the whole stuff and now the first two D64 images of the upcoming new GEOS 5.53 are ready and fully tested on YAPE 1.02 and a real PLUS/4 with C1551 and with succsses.

With Star Commander and my C1571 I could easyly create a copy of the two D64 images on real disks.
The two disks, a German and an English boot disk, includes with GeoWrite and GeoDraw. More disks will come...

Here the whole story:
