Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) The missing flag I picked was the Kingsoft one, favouritism (not by me) was also given to Kingsoft as it has the longest anthem lol. :D
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) @Csabo woho, had no idea about that till now! And that's strange, because since I was a teen, entering international fake athletes' names was a big part of the whole game's experience, how could I miss this particular? :o
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) @Luca I used the Anco tape release. My guess, of all the flags the Union Jack was a pain the butt as it may of required 3 colors where the diagonal lines meet the large red cross. The first loading screen showing all the flags may of had a blue background screen to fill in the gaps of the UJ flag, but here on the results screen the background screen color might be black by mistake and may of been missed during testing. And strange the results screen for Biathlon is red!
@Csabo Congrats on your new time!!! As for hitting the targets on Biathlon... It might be slightly easier to hit them on a real machine and a CRT than emulation but if it helps. Try and use the top and bottom lines of the panel the targets are placed in as a guide to when to press fire. Like press fire the moment the middle of the sight is on the panel line, and adjust your timing if it misses from there. Sit as close to the screen as possible to get ninja focus on the target area.
Ski Jump: I don't think any of us know how to play it properly..., we sort of have an idea and hope it's a good one.
Think of the directions on a joystick as a clock face. Left = 9 O'clock, Up = 12 O'clock, Right = 3 O'clock and Down = 6 O'clock.
As you go down the slop press Fire and Hold Left (9 O'lock) on the stick. On the next screen the guy should be level to his skies. If you slowly rotate the stick from 9 O'clock down to 8 O'clock and slowly rotate it up to 10 O'clock going back to 9 O'clock and repeat slowly it helps keep the skier level for longer. Imagine there is a strong wind and your trying to fight it, trying to keep a balance. Even for the longest of jumps like 315 which I have done in the past the skier will sit down and may even cross his skies during flight so there is no escape from this happening!! When he sits down or he crossed his skies during flight pull the stick down to 6 O'clock and "slowly" rotate the stick anticlockwise back round to 9 O'clock. What you may find is that the skier will fight you and not comply so you have to rotate clockwise just a little while watching the animation to see what he does to then continue going anticlockwise back to 9 O'clock to get him to settle back down. He may try to sit down or cross his skies during flight a number of times, only with lots and lots of practice and getting a better feel for it will he sit down once or twice during play. The more you get a feel for it the less likely he will cross his skies. Sorry if this sounds like had work, sadly it is and will feel like trying to ride a bike for the first time until you get the hang of it. If at any point you think the skier is being more difficult than normal when trying to settle him back down, pull the stick back down to 6 O'clock and try rotating anticlockwise to 9 O'clock slowly again - as if to reset the skier.
Once the landing phase happens I try to keep the guy in the flight position for as long as possible lol. At the point you think it's time to land use Left & Right to get the skier to stand up. You are better off having the skier just ever so slightly forward in the upright position to guarantee a perfect landing. If he is ever so slight back in the upright position you will crash.
BOBSLED: To start tap forwards/UP and keep tapping forwards/Up quickly until you reach the first corner. This will give you lots of speed! If a corner goes around left then pull the joystick Left towards the centre of the track, if the corner goes right pull Right. If you are very low on a corner it is possible to correct your line to go higher, very quickly let go of the controls and press in the same direction you were again - the faster you are the harder it is to correct your line - and you to have to be quick to correct your self, proper quick on the controls. The higher you are on the corners the faster you will be and the quicker your times will become. However, the faster you go the quicker your reaction times will need to be. As you get to the last 6 or so corners on a fast run they become lightning fast!!! Only the brave will get good times.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) It's like that in the original game. Looks correct on the "enter your name and country" screen, but it has incorrect colors when the results are shown.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Those are fantastic scores! The Down Hill time is a Plus/4 World record too, it ties you for first place in the Hall of Fame
I did 25:4 in Slalom which I think is excellent, probably the best I can do. I keep trying biathlon too, looks like I have the skiing part down, but I usually only have one or two hits... There's gotta be some timing trick to the shooting part too, I guess.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Good time Csabo Looking at what you have done now and knowing your not that far away from the top times it's reminded me of something. The less you steer the faster your time will be so to save even more time try an play as clean and as tight as possible along the shortest path..., and it can help trying to remember how many times you tap the stick left or right at each section of the course as you set your self up to pass flags or tree's that might be in the way that you can't yet see.
I set a 4 player (mik) Complete all Events game to see what I could come up with. I broke one record. BTW if your wondering about the flags, I used different ones for each (mik) player hoping to hear some different tunes on the podium.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) No need for a video for downhill, or for it's sister event Slalom as they both play the same when you ski. I'm not sure what the best times are without looking but if you want to get closer to the top times this will help...
Hold Fire to Ski. Let go of Fire and pull back/Down to slow down.
Keep pushing forward/UP as you play, this will put your skier in to a racing position and make you faster. Also push forward as your steer, every little helps. Avoid bumps/jumps where possible, however the odd bump/jump at the start of a race can not be helped.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Well, it's time for Downhill, I guess! I beat my old record, but with 45 seconds, I'm still dead last @MIK, how about another Winter Events for Dummies video?
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) With regards to Practice, if you get a good time and you wish to save that record, (I sort of remember) you must to go back to the main menu straight away. If you have another play without going back to the main menu straight away your best time may be lost.
Csabo as long as your having fun that's all that matters. Any improvements will only make you appreciate Winter Events even more. BTW the Speed Skating is done in almost the same way as the flat on Biathlon. Once you get a feel for the Left/Right timing and the skater is going fast your realize your not going Left/Right quickly at all, instead you are in a smooth timing zone where it feels your doing very little to keep the speed up. Getting going is the hardest part, more so when your out of practice but don't worry if you are behind the computer, if you get some good speed and can keep it going your soon catch the computer and beat him.
Luca, very nice Ferrari Red in your Biathlon picture. Btw I've just noticed we missed something comparing early versions of Winter Events. On the back Anco cover and in the Anco Advert the "Number of Players" option is not on the top like it is in the retail release!
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) This video right here... This is what Let's Play is all about
It's unbelievable to see you gain speed so quickly. Thank you so much for the explanation, I'm going to try it out right now! (Rafi, you better beat your old score too )
Edit: done, I did 3:59, which is still pitiful, but I beat my previous score by over a minute :-)
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) @Csabo: You know, it is a rhythm game. You have to find and keep the 'beat' and you'll be going quite fast. There were short moments when I managed to find it only to loose it seconds later. And it was a false button press through which I found out that you must repeatedly press down to speed up on downward slopes.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) I hope you saved your record to disk or took a photo, because 2:09:# would be a world record in the Hall of Fame! Your current record here is 2:21:9.
Both of those are incredible to me... I managed to a 5 minute run, which is a new personal best, but I see that gerliczer struggled with this as well, as did DGS (he said he couldn't complete even one round). Biathlon is awesome IMHO, just like the rest of the events. How on earth did Udo manage to squeeze in all those screens, have such a large sprite which moves perfectly...
Anyway, back to playing: so the English language cover doesn't explain at all what you're supposed to do, but I see that the German one does. So apparently during different sections of the skiing, you're supposed to move the joy differently? What's the proper way to speed up in this game?
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Lol I don't recall him looking like the Hulk? I remember the C3P0 silver style leg tho.
I bet the Skier's fav tune is Greensleeves, and as for his fav game I'll take a guess and say it's Slime World on the Atari Lynx.
EDIT: Some surprising green info!
Yesterday I fired up the Plus/4 and had a few goes on Biathlon, (20inch TV via S-Video) and the guys face isn't easy to see that it's green, you could be forgiven if you thought it was a different color...
Just now however I fired up a C16 and the guys face is a bright green! What's more the green/yellow seen in the church tower looks weaker than it does on Plus/4. So yeah this is mad, there is a colour difference in the green level between a real Plus/4 and a real C16!!!
Btw I did a 2.09 for Biathlon, just a shame I missed most of the targets making it over 3mins instead. They say your reaction time gets slower with age, for once I think they are right ha!
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) They used to say time fly's when your having fun but in truth they lie, unless your a kid. Time goes much quicker the older you get and you always feel you never have enough! And yep even for one game Friday came around too quickly, unless it was Tetris 2K21 or Arkanoid +4 when the real hardware would be on meltdown.
But yeah shame all good things come to an end any way. And sorry I didn't play for a long time Csabo even though you were dropping hits, poor health reasons were/are the main reason. Cheers though Csabo!
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) As per MIK's suggestion, this month Let's Play Winter Events!
Winter's here (at least, here in Canada it has already snowed), and in December many of us will have less time than usual for hobbies, as we spend it with loved ones, etc. If you want to stick to the "old schedule", you could pick up one event each weekend! So, if your time permits, pick up this old classic and have a blast
You find yourself with even more free time? How about picking up one of the 49 games from the list this year, and giving it another go? On that note, what were your favourites, or, to put it another way; if you had to pick a game from this list, which one would you enjoy or look forward the most?
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Well, I just went a beat my old score Simple trick: if any diamond looked even remotely dangerous to pick up, leave it alone. I managed to collect 33 this way. Could definitely do better
Also, I'm in this week with 4855 (couldn't beat my old score yet):
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Although Let's play is not a competition, entering a score, no matter how bad it is, into the Hall Of Fame is still the best way to commemorate your participation in it. At least that's how I see and do it.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Thanks guys for playing a round with Phoenix Recovered, IMHO it's a fun game.
This week, Let's Play Sgt. Helmet Zero! It's another one of those games that I personally don't mind picking up every once in a while, it's highly re-playable. Definitely worth a look!
Also, for the nth time, Let's Play is not a contest; you don't have to submit a score to the Hall Of Fame to participate. The point is to play a little, talk about games (both playing them and game development), and have fun.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) I just read, very cool Yape can rotate the screen for the new Phonenix! May we see more games like this!
4:3 LCD screens from the early 2000's which people almost give away these days can be handy as a means to have a screen to rotate, (if using the real hardware). Saves damaging your heavy and much loved CRT's.
EDIT: As awesome as this image is to see..., it almost killed me trying to set this up so have a picture before I stop breathing.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) (One note before we move on: there were several people who kind of commented about playing Tetris 2K21... But I'm not sure if they did, and they didn't submit a score or comment here or PM me, so I didn't count them. Anyway, Let's Play is winding down at the end of this year.)
This week: Let's Play Phoenix Recovered! A nice 2021 release. Be sure to grab the latest YAPE, and select OpenGL render, then rotate the screen. If you don't have Windows, or you only play on the real iron... you can still give it a shot - even without rotating the physical hardware it is sort of playable.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Heh, so nobody put me in my place, even though it would have been well deserved... Therefore I "won" last week with the terrible, terrible score of 5680. BTW, I'm winding down Let's Play by the end of the year, this should be no surprise to anyone
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Anything goes to get the job done, on a later level with chains dangling and tanks moving across the bottom you can stand on the floor for a rest and pick the bad guys off that way.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) @MMS, I'm not near a Plus4 at the moment but if I remember correct.., if your at the top of the screen shooting, let go of fire for a split second and press it again, I can't remember for sure but I sort of recall the first shot from rehitting fire again is higher and will kill stuff at the top of the screen.
If my memory is good... I think it was done this way to stop people sitting at the top of the screen getting easy kills.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Whew, managed to beat my old score with 5680. So far, I'm winning Let's Play this week again... Ain't nobody gonna put me in place... right?
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Really great and enjoyable music. the action is fast paced, the hires gfx is cute. The only thing bugs me during gameplay, that at your top position you cannot eliminate the enemy at the highest position.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Since you have to constantly (and quickly!) need to switch between jobs with J/K, you need one hand on the keyboard. Maybe this could have been tied to Fire+Left/Right?
Nice video Verona And nice Halloween costume too - oops, I mean scary that death himself showed up in your place.
Anyone want to try Super Pipeline? Not a very popular choice for Let's Play, I guess, which is too bad, I quite like this little game.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) I appreciate the work gone in to porting Mainframe style Lemmings aka green screen and there is a charm to such games, just... The original game once you've played it, enjoyed it and got over that initial addictive period is as much fun as washing the dishes, there is an order to doing it and you always do it in the same way which makes it tedious and boring. You need to be in the right mood to do the washing up or you might be tempted to say 'Oh No!' in that Lemmings voice kind of way.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Well, the new Lemmings game doesn't have scoring (plus, the scene reacted with such stunned silence to this release, I think everyone needs some time to truly take it all in )
It's a classic C=64 title, and these kinds of games usually don't get converted to Plus/4 due to the sprites. Super pipeline is chock full of them. I don't know why TLC maestro decided to undertake such a task... As having converted games that use sprites myself, it's not easy. Regardless, the end result is absolutely playable (albeit with fewer colors than the original - obviously).
This game... is one of the games we have that's just "overlooked" IMHO, but it's worth your time. Check it out Remember, to participate in "Let's Play", you don't have to submit a score to the Hall Of Fame.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Verona weeks before the official release, I asked to Antonio if a Plus/4 version could be realistic, and I know he actually made some tests, but Monstro Giganto is a C64 project, based on the heavy usage od SID speech, which is basically thought as a C64 cartridge release. Hence, there has been no further evolution on the possible Plus/4 port.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) It's a little busy for sure, plus the keyboard wires feel a little short. It just about reaches the TC64. But it works.
So far I've not noticed any sound lag or any lag, but then I've only tested Arkanoid so far. The sound comes from PC speakers I have plugged into it. It seems to run and sound okay. I got a pretty decent score but I used a joypad. Will test the keyboard more but it seemed okay typing on the boot screen. I will let you know with more updates in the other relevant topic here. Still awaiting the updates so it fixes the few C16/Plus4 keys which so far isn't compatible with the TC64, and adding D64 functionality into the C16/Plus4 core itself. Anytime now.
Preferably I'd like to repair at least one of my real C16's (I know which one), but will end up using the keyboard from the other for this. It will make for an excellent FPGA alternative backup machine. I can then sell the other faulty one for spare parts (without the keyboard) which is also heatsinked with 64k ram. I suspect that both has the same fault issue.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Very busy looking setup for the price of a couple of working C16's, but yeah you can argue it will last a lot longer than the real iron.
Glad you have something running tho, out of interest what, (if there is any) is the sound lag like? The game Thrust might be a good game to test the keyboard, it might even test your set up as it displays very differently just like Tom Thumb does compared to most other games.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Sorry, I forgot that here I must write in English... At 5 AM, I was a LITTLE tired....
Csabo: Yes, Indeed. But his FULL name is "Felsőbbrendű Agyvezérlő Szoftver Implantátum", so it's F.A.SZ.I., but in the subtitles, I used the F.A.SZ. too. :) It has the English version too, but you will se when the translation finished.
By the way, on YouTube, the Hun sub is useable now, the Eng sub is done! I think about the not-hungarian fellows now!
And who was waiting for the blooper at the end of the video?
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) És íme, visszatértem egy új videóval... Nem ott lesz vége, ahol várod. (Translation: And behold, I've returned with a new video. It won't end up where you expect it would.)
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) That noise of something dropping.... Sounded like someone was browsing your C16/Plus4 tape collection and having pulled one out the rest on the shelf came with it.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Well, I did have 3 months of practice
Here's a badly recorded video of me playing one round just now... complete with keyboard clacking, people throwing out garbage in the background and a wave at the camera with only half my face in it. Truly the highlight of video production!
Thank you guys all for the kind words about this game!
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Charlemagne: thank you, the credit for that goes all to the very friendly interface coded by Csabo working fast in both the right and the wrong moves. But wait, we pushed the game enough but higher scores from other players are probably behind the corner ;)
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Actually, you shouldn't enter anything for sub-game (since Candy Dots only has one category). That fields only needs to be used for games like Summer Events (where we have ONE game but MANY events, so we have to keep each event as a separate sub-game).
I'm happy with "decent game", thank you for checking it out
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) This week: Let's Play Candy Dots! It's something different, a bit of a change from the action games of the past weeks. I hope you guys will like it!
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Try joystick? The clunky timing of it's movement felt ok with a joystick on a real machine. Sometimes tho "not the best coded games" play faster on keyboard, (joystick slows them down) and maybe that's not helping with the timing? The game does have a charm of it's own tho and maybe deserves a better look than we were willing to give it.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) @MIK: yeah, great gold game. A Spectrum coloured 3PO plays golf, so the low scores are not a big surprise
@retroscener: nope, it is not your keyboard (or maybe my PC has the same issue). Somehow the code is suggish, I had the feeling it missed some enemies I hit, also buttonpresses.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Not too great at this one. The controls seem a little off for me that sometimes the ship doesn't move. Maybe it's my PC keyboard.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Away from home, had to use YAPE instead of real iron, nonetheless I've found a hour to play Kane...but the game has cheated me, turning my 22473 into 12473 due the passage from 19999 to...10000!
EDIT: back at home, played the game on the real hardware in the end; apparently, David360 is right, once you rule the game's mechanics you're able to play it forever, so I've deliberately chosen to stop my game under his score, in order to preserve his 1st place, as the player who did it first. Hence, my score is: 40194.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) After several plays, I got 6.7K, which puts me to 3rd place currently. I recorded it on video as well, if anyone wants to take a look...
Basically, my strategy is, in the first part I move the crosshair as far right as I can, then I try to fire an arrow when a bird crosses a roughly 45 degree angle from my position. It works well, I got 22 birds in the first round and 25 in the second!
In the second level, dispatching bad guys might seem impossible, but it's not: you just have to be really exact.
I hope this helps someone and you guys give the game a second look
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Goah I haven't played this one since 1986 when I first bought it, and casually tossed it aside, lol.
It's missing the horse level on the C64 version but it's a pretty decent game.
Anyway, I was discharged from hospital two days ago, now back home. My C16 is on the blink still so until I can get around getting that fixed, it's YAPE screenshots. I might just stick with that now anyway for the time being.
Score: 6633
P.S. Surprised Sword Of Destiny has no HoF scores yet. Perhaps that should be our next Let’s Play challenge.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Nice scores guys I really liked playing Jetbrix, it's well done and fast-paced.
So, to switch gears a little, this week Let's Play Kane! It's a decidedly chill game for a shooter But at least playing one round with it is VERY quick. Have fun!
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) You don't need big points to reach any level, you just need to complete the stage by breaking the wall or wait for the timer to run out. You just need to survive.
EDIT:
As we are not getting younger, eyes starting to fail and reaction times are getting slower... I moved the Plus/4 from a 14" screen to a 20" LaRgE one and now I can see what I'm doing, Lv6 first go.
I wouldn't worry about your top score Luca, but if you do make it to lv6 your find it much the same as Lv5 in the amount of bricks you have to break through. Beyond that, I kind of recall a level with flying bricks coming from both directions - that's if I remember correct.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) retroscener: dunno, I've never seen level 6, even trying to luckily finish the level with a blitz of spinners and bombs. Anyway, at the moment it's irrelevant in order to achieve a high score, whereas the optimization of the spinners' usage allows to finish level 1 with up to 15000 points.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Had to spent the whole sunday afternoon and several games in order to nail the real big score to aim to, when playing any level in Jetbrix, but in the end I've found the way to get hundreds in one move. My score is: 40150. And got faith to say: there's enough room yet to improving it.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) ahhh gotcha, avoid the colour clash situation by keeping the flying brick in the black zone. I also find staying to the edge of the screen as possible gives you more time to avoid them.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Level 5 can be beat and so can levels after it.
The trick is to stay slightly in the air ready in anticipation of the flying brick..., you fall quicker than you can thrust upwards to escape it. The brick always enters the screen at the hight you are at when it arrives so if you stick to the ground too much your asking for trouble as it were.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Fantastic score MIK. It's going to be very tough trying to knock you off the top hof spot. Level 5 feels unbeatable. I would have thought that score would have been enough. It's the only flaw with this game. Too tough too quickly that you're lucky to survive one level of the flying bricks. Has it ever been done?
Okay. Well that was what confused me. I know there are three sets of numbers & letters there before my main file name. The first set appears to be the current date. As for the rest, they're just random to me. What are they and how can I locate them?
I am unable to find them again because of the two different sets of numbers in each image. I found them before because they're in my Fire Ant images.
I know about the Plus4 uploader too but that's not for this. This really isn't straight forward stuff for the average gamer nor scener.
I did it another way though. Just can't remember how.
My memory is pretty bad but lately it's gotten a lot worse whilst I'm still in hospital so have not been the best lately. Tell me how you do it.
Oh sod it. I just uploaded it to here and linked it to the Hall of Fame area also: http://ibb.co/T8BqYX4
I'll likely do the same with the other image upload areas from now on also, lol. Sorry for my confusion but this is much easier. I am just going through what feels like amnesia. I couldn't even recall how to add a simple website link just now using plain html. I never forget shit like that. it not only makes me feel like an idiot, it worries me. Pretty sure it's temporary due to my current illness including that damn covid, but will check it out.
Re: Let's Play (2021 #3) Get your self a USB game pad and never leave home without it again.
As for posting images, look at one of your older posts and click edit to see how it was done. Copy the html and just update the link with-in it. Smileys, do the same, just copy'n paste from an older post. And yeah once you fully post a post, you have to add things by hand there after if you edit it. Again just look at an older post and copy the slice of html for a smiley face for example and paste it in to you new message.
It worked on my C16. I just realised that I was playing a slightly early version of YAPE. So just installed the latest version of YAPE and didn't touch any settings.
So this time around, I began in joystick mode. I just went left, but it goes up and left now. Go up, and it also goes left. Moving right is totally fine. Not quite as bad this time but it's seriously annoying. I'll keep trying. I just know I nailed the controls, but this was in Custom mode. I was becoming more familiar with the game again. Drat!
Cursor Keys mode Left: up, left Right: OK Up: left Fire: OK
Custom mode Left: up, left, fire Right: OK Up: left Fire: OK
NumPad mode Left: OK Right: OK Up: OK Fire: OK
Phew! It's definitely my least preferred option particularly on this game, but at least I can play it now. It may have been what I'm sure I found before (I forget). Fairly sure it was something else. Maybe there's a small bug fix, or perhaps someone could provide a small fix for this game (and possibly others) just for YAPE? But as I said, it's all a little screwy ^:-/
P.S. How come those last two emojis fail to appear after I refresh the page after an edit? Sorry guys, i'm doing it again. At least I know I'm not some total noob now, lol (b)
Anyway. Finally had a proper play using the NumPad. Was never great at this game. It gets really tough with the flying bricks from level 5 onwards. Can't remember it ever getting that difficult so quickly, but checking out the Hall of Fame, it appears it does. I thought I was just playing very badly.
Score: 20,480
Reevaluating the game, it's clearly a colour clash issue with the flying bricks which cannot be helped. It would have been nice if they were a more visible colour. Added idea is fly a little less frequent and slower from the start then gradually speed things up a little in later levels. It would surely get a 9 or 10 from me then.
Now I've forgotten how to add images here, I did before. I did upload it. This is being stuck in hospital. Perhaps some added instructions with some of these trickier features are needed.
I remember a link being given, but seemed to have vanished. Tried it twice. I'm going potty.
