Re: The last Debenhams store has closed (UK).

Really? Man, that sucks. I remember going to the one in Southampton. Not a heck of a lot of stores anymore: Dixons, Debenhams... Is Game still around? (not that they had anything cool). In the US the only store left is Gamestop, and we all know how bad a shape they're in..

I remember playing Sonic the Hedgehog for the first time there. There wasn’t a Debenhams store local to me during my original C16 days. It’s a different world now though compared to our day back in the 80’s, and not really for the better either.

The last Debenhams store has closed (UK).

15th of May 2021

Debenhams was a department store in the UK that sold clothes and household goods to the masses. Back in the early 1980's and before ToysRus came they were one of the biggest stockists of Children Toy's including electronic handheld games like Nintendo (Game&Watch), Grandstand, Tomy, Bandai ect..
Debenhams were not really known for selling computer software but they did deal in computer hardware. In the early days machines such as the Vic20, C64, Spectrum, BBC and Electron as well a few others were being snapped up. During 1984/1985 things were getting out of hand with so many new machines on the market that in our store the computers were moved away from the Toys section and moved to a large area on the 1st floor so they could be displayed properly. One thing that can be said about Debenhams, they were possibly the 'largest' stockists in the UK of Commodore's C16 & Plus/4 computers - helped largely by the fact the Plus/4 took a big price drop and was now under £100 and came with 11 games.

And there we have it.wink

Debenhams were responsible for a good many of the C16/Plus4 units bought in the UK. But yeah... some stores were already being closed before Covid came along and of course Covid made things even harder. Only the name exists now as an online only store.

R.I.P Debenhams Stores. We give thanks for your services to the C16/Plus4 community. angel
