As you know there were no units like the REU for the Plus/4. Those expansions I've seen were hacks, the first may have done by Hannes, and later Solder,
then I know there have been one designed by Csory which handled the 256K a lot better (being still compatible with the former). All these go with replacing the 4164 rams to 41256 chips on the motherboard, plus building a 'small' board for the paging.
Actually, I do have a doc with schematic of an 1Mb expansion for the Plus/4. It was done by Hendrik Lipka, and it's a successor of the above.
Its only disadvantage is the plain manufacturing tech, you have to solder
8x4 14 pin chips one on one, and then use the well known '3d-net technology'
around the chips to wire everything to the right place. (I guess it could be better designed, but I felt nothing to do the PCB work :-( ). Still,
you can have it. However, I can't help much in its programming (maybe,
the original doc does, or at least I have a disk with 256K exp stuffs from Solder (with the CBM plotfiles I mentioned above) which has also programming specifications for the exp).
