As far as I know Nukeman was working at a travel agency, and he travelled a lot because of this. So I wouldn't take it granted,
that he just got away with your money to the USA.

I've also heard about that in Germany a lot of guys just sold
'free' hungarian stuffs (demos, games, converts etc...), and this was common before Nukeman started his trips to hungary to organize hungarian plus4 coders, but I really don't know the details as all these informations are from second hand, and it's questionable if they are thrustworthy.
