 Re: Dreamtime 2K17

Unbelievable graphics!
My question: Is there a chance to damage my plus/4 or 1801 monitor, if i try to display this images?

 Re: Dreamtime 2K17

No, there's no reason this should damage any monitor. The interlace effect simply switches some TED registers on every frame, you have probably seen this in many other demos or picture shows without knowing. (Also note that Larry released the converter he used to create these: Larry's FLI Converter.)

@George: These machines are tough and robust. thumbsup A little temporal colour mixing won't hurt them. happy The fact that they are around or over 40 is what makes them fragile. sad

@Csabo @Gerliczer @MMS

I am asking, because i beleive to remember somebody telluig hearing a high pitch noise from a Philips monitor while displaying Dreamtime pictures...Maybe i am mixing it up with something

edit: I tried to load the demo with an SD2IEC drive. After the Start-Screen i press SPACE but it sems to hang.

 Re: Dreamtime 2K17

@George: those pictures are all interlace, I suppose is uses the monitor a little differently than normal.
You can check it with my Conan slideshow: there are I think one or two interlaced pictures, the rest is just normal
So if your monitor gives sound only with those pictures, you have the answer.

How to solve it?
You know in one of my previous jobs I supported CRT TV production, and I was in contact with several service workshops and experts around Europe. Once we discussed the noisy / squeezing CRT TVs, and my English parner, the leader of the UK service workshops told, that the TV servicemen best friend is the lady's nail lacquer. The noise (approx 50-60% od the cases) caused by the loosened coils at the deflection coils (around the CRT tube). A few droplets of lacquer usually fixing the noise.

The remaining 50% needs better knowledge on the circuitry, typically the high frequency area had a component (typically a smaller coil) giving the noise.

Certainly it should be done by an experienced person familiar with power electronics. In production and service workshops after all cases you dsiassembled the TV housing, after you finished you need to do a high voltage test to safeguard noone get electroshocked due to a fallen screw or wire in wrong position.
Even the charged capacitors on the board can cause electric shock with an unplugged monitor.

Update: just found it in Wiki:

@MMS
Thank you for the infos. I will give it a try. If you don't hear from my channel any more for a long time,then you know what happend happy

Its a pity i can't load most of the demos with my equipment. But dealing with disks again is not what i really want.

Please take care happy
Anyhow my practice is to wear soft leather gloves in risky situations.
It increases the "skin" resistance so much, the 230V cannot pass. I knew I touched once the 230V this way, but I felt almost nothing.
Maybe some plastic gloves would do, but they are easily punctures by a wire, as they are pretty thin..

 Re: Dreamtime 2K17

@George: I really love my SD2IEC (especially with JiffyDOS and the FlexSD firmware) but if you want compatibility you should give Pi1541 a try. It emulates 1541 (and probably 1571 and 1581 - haven't checked for a while) drives at the hardware level so fastloaders also work. You still won't have 1551 compatibility but 1541 should be good enough.

@siz Great idea.
Can you recommend a seller who sells them fully assembled in a nice box?

 Re: Dreamtime 2K17

Normally the parts advertised online are ready, the only thing missing is the Raspberry PI. You simply put them together. Otherwise, look on eBay. Here is a provider who offers a complete package:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/186736028657?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=707-153316-537668-3&mkcid=2&itemid=186736028657&targetid=4582420911939486&device=c&mktype=&googleloc=&poi=&campaignid=590145417&mkgroupid=1261141477324241&rlsatarget=pla-4582420911939486&abcId=9320708&merchantid=87778&msclkid=bbd70003f9b71b84359d6722fce8cdfa

Otherwise, just wait and see. I'm still hoping for a PI1551 happy

 Re: Dreamtime 2K17

@siz You mentioned the PI1541 driver. My question is not related to the demo. Does your PI1541 read the Bard's tale 1 and 2 programs correctly? For me, the PI1541 does not load it.

 Re: Dreamtime 2K17

@Andras: it's slightly offtopic here and I can't answer: I haven't used my pi1541 in years (that's why I'm not aware of recent firmware status) so I cannot answer. Currently my workbench (:D) is occupied with a disassembled Amiga so I can't even test right now.

@siz You are right. This is offtopic. I'm starting a new one.
