Can you explain why not? My idea is: the 6529 on the expansion port will be directly connected to the CPU and will set D2 low/high. Even if U11 tries to set it to the opposite level, the inbetween resistor will make it unable to influence the voltage the CPU actually sees, which will be what the 6529 wanted. The value of the resistor will keep the current flowing through it to a small value.

I have tested it with a 6529 and it seems to work very well, but I understand I might have been lucky, I might be missing something due to my little knowledge of electronics. Can you please add some detail?

I understand the point about people not wanting to solder something into their C16s, but it can be done easily, cleanly and reversibly, that would be sufficient for me.
