Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

Hi there,

the game crahes or hangs after completing the first stage and don't load the next stage.
i tried it several times an also used cheats but everytime the same result.

Re: Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

There's a zip in the Terra Nova page containing some buggy C16 and Plus/4 bugged versions. Try the latter and tell us if what you see is what you've got from your real tape.

Re: Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

ok, i tried but i got some problems creating a working image.
I guess there is a copy protection on this disk and i do not have a parallel cabel for my
ZoomFloppy Device. The following Message appears when i try to start making an image:

"the source disk ID (S4) is unknown. this could be a corrupt disk, a copy-protectected disk,
or unsupportet format.Do you want to try imaging with NIBTOOLS?"

When i create a standard D64 Image the program gives a warning that the image is bigger than 683 blocks (688 blocks)...trying to make a NIB image fails and program abort...

Sorry but i am new to the Commodore 64 - and plus4 World and hope you can help me.
Also i am interrested to contribute an share my stuff...

Any german users active here?

May be a silly idea but i can send my Disk to a proffessional and he/she can make a working image of it.

At least, sorry for my bad english happy

regards Norman

Hi Norman,

Thanks for the file! It's up on Plus/4 World now for everyone to try. I haven't been able to load Jump Jet from it though ("JJ" on the disk). The other games started up. Does it work for you?

(p.s. still waiting for your reply to my email happy)

Re: Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

@Blinddarm: I also tested it with VICE and it failed (a bit earlier than in YAPE). May I ask which VICE version did you try? Also, if the loader only checks for certain bad sectors a D64 with error info block added might suffice.

Hello Gaia,

I'm using WinVice 3.1 (Mar 2017) with 1551 Disk Drive setting and True Drive Emulation.
Virtual device traps activated
Also works with 1541(-II) Drive Emulation

Re: Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

OK, it works in VICE now, thanks happy Looking at the G64 it seems that it's having so-called "weak bits" which is a sort of copy protection - so far unseen on the CBM 264 family, so it's cool you have recovered this. YAPE currently does not have weak bits emulation but this will hopefully change soon wink

Re: Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

Hmm, for me the G64 worked on the latest YAPE (with the exception of Jump Jet), but I guess that *should* work too.

Thanks for the ZIP, I looked through it, but it's mostly supplemental stuff, not something we'd store on the site. Here are the contents:

I could use the .NIB image so thanks in advance. BTW the image also works for me using the latest beta (1.1.6) that Csabo used, except Jump Jet.

Re: Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

The problem with Terra Nova is actually that the level datas for the next levels are missing on tape as well as on disk. Incidentally, the intro is missing as well.

On 6 of the Best from Anco Terra Nova was saved with all level datas.

Re: Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

Just testing the G64 with the following results:

On VICE (3.2) the G64 works with all 6 games, including Jump Jet. You can use a 1541 or 1551.

On YAPE with 1541 the G64 works with all 6 games.

On YAPE with 1551 the G64 works with 5 games, except Jump Jet.

I think the G64 is ok and its a problem from the YAPE?

Re: Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

It's been a good number of years since I last played Terra Nova properly but from memory you have to do each level 2 or 3 times before it will load the next stage. As soon as you get to the end it restarts. To the untrained eye or for anyone that has forgotten this may look like a bug...

The original Anco tape release fully works on the real hardware, however it was never the easiest game to load even with properly aligned heads as the tape slightly acted as if the head alignment of the duplication process was out. I killed my original copy trying to make a working .tap image, and I never managed to make a fully working one.

It uses the same Turbo as Pin Point if I remember correctly and that sort of worked. wink

Re: Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

I have to correct first, the G64 does not run in YAPE with an emulated 1541, sorry, please. Is there an unknown problem of the YAPE here? With the VICE, it works flawlessly.

However, it is remarkable how the floppy disk was described. If you disassemble all the main programs, you'll notice how much was written on the floppy disk:

Name Blocks located
-----------------------------------------------------
Alien Invasion (AI) 105 from $1040 - $7800
Jump Jet (JJ) 85 from $1000 - $6400
Karate King (KK) 105 from $1800 - $8000
Out on a Limb (OU) 92 from $0FE8 - $6B00
Strip Poker (SP) 239 from $1000 - $FD00
Terra Nova (TN) 186 from $1800 - $D000
===
total blocks 812

Not to mention (not counting here) the basic program for the menu and the self-starting head of the programs, I do not know if there is a head for the entire disk or for each program

More like normally there is space on a standard floppy disk. Or was track 36 - 40 shared here?

Regarding Terra Nova reloading the following is said: the program contains 2 loading routines - once from $ 2C2D and one from $ 2ED6. Only the first routine is set for device address 8, so the program will not start at all. The second address still points to device address 1 for tape, but is also the routine that is jumped to reload the other levels. Only when you change the device address, the program will also try to load from floppy disk.

Re: Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

This would also mean that the current D64 image has been dumped as a normal 35 tracks disk, which could be proven to be wrong...

Re: Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

I am not sure if the original floppy disk was formatted with 40 tracks. But YAPE has no emulation of 40 tracks (no matter if it's 1541 or 1551), but you can turn it on at VICE. When I tested the G64 in the VICE, however, 40 tracks had not been used.

Apart from Super DOS for the 1551, there is no 40 track operating system for the Plus / 4.

Can the Kingsoft Format program help us? Did someone have a closer look?

"Apart from Super DOS for the 1551, there is no 40 track operating system for the Plus / 4."

What do these programs do then:http://plus4world.powweb.com/software/Plus76_Block_Free, http://plus4world.powweb.com/software/Plus95_Blocks, http://plus4world.powweb.com/software/681_Blocks and http://plus4world.powweb.com/software/759_Blocks? Just asking, 'cause I never tried them.

Re: Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

YAPE normally manages to run extended D64 images, just like Rocket Science or the forthcoming commercial release of Pets Rescue.

Re: Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

@gerliczer:

Sorry I expressed myself a little incomprehensible: I meant that no further 40-track DOS is known, which is present in the drive by replacing the ROM's. Programs (your examples), which create more space on the disk, I had not considered, sorry, please.

By the way: SUPER DOS is also not emulated properly. YAPE then displays a D64 with 844 blocks free, but in fact only 840 blocks are free. I used it for a while and the floppy disks sometimes make reading difficult.

Re: Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

Rüdiger: YAPE can handle 40 tracks properly (it's nothing special actually) and the G64 format capacity is by default 82 half tracks (41 full tracks) so that is also handled. Unlike VICE, it can not extend normal sized (35) D64's though.

Re: Terra Nova on Sextett Compilation buggy?

@gerliczer
>What do these programs do then

These are a bit different because they do not extend a disk to 40/41 tracks with a single directory. They add a second 5/6 track disk from track 36. They move the head to track 35, step one more track and tell the drive that the head is on track 18. They format this second disk to have only these tracks free (19-22/23). When you want to go back to the "normal" disk they just bump the head to track 1.
This way you could expand the capacity of the disk with a stock drive, you don't need a special ROM to handle more thank 35 tracks.
I used this method back then and even wrote some USR programs (&HI and &LO) which could be executed by the drive directly and did the switch between the two disk parts.

I just uploaded the repaired G64 and the D64 here. A user from the german Forum64 - Stephan Scheuer - has repaired the G64. He is not registered on our site, but later may want to report it himself.
