|  3+1 Software hangs on F1+Return
Hey all,
I usually hang over at Lemon64, but I finally got around to getting a Plus/4 and cleaning it up. When I got it I tested it a bit, Basic Works, Cassette saving/loading works, Monitor loads properly, Sound is perfect, no artifacts on screen etc but when I try to load the 3+1 software the screen turns purple then black (as in vice) but stays black instead of loading the 3+1 ROMs.
There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with any of the chips, I tried Reseating the High/Low ROMs to no avail. I checked the TED and it was a little warm after trying to load the 3+1 software for 30 minutes but not what I would call hot.
Its also a Ceramic/Gold TED, is that common?

If the screen turns black, then the 3+1 ROMs are active. One (or possibly both) of these ROMs are bad. You can either burn new ones, buy replacements, or use the disk version of the 3+1 software.

You can also take the 3+1 ROM's out of a Plus/4 and the machine will function fine, it will now act like a Commodore 16 with 64K. The F1 key will now print GRAPHIC and when you switch on the 3+1 message on the BASIC screen will be gone.
Some people take them out to reduce heat inside the machine as the software is never used... and while the software may not be used it does feel strange when it's not there, sentimental reasons.

I definitely think it's the ROMs, tried a ?PEEK(1525) and initially got 162 (which is expected). This must have triggered something in the machine as now the F1 key prints GRAPHIC and the ?PEEK(1525) outputs 255. The boot screen also no longer prints the 3+1 message. Note: the ROMs are still physically installed.
I definitely think its the ROMs now and have been offered a replacement for the price of postage from Lemon64. I agree with the strange feeling, the uselessness of the 3+1 software adds to its charm.

If you want to use an office suite with your Plus/4, I recommend to drop the 3+1 stuff and get yourself "Script Plus". For spreadsheet issues, there's SVS' "SVS Calc" available, and for a database you can't go wrong with "Superbase".
All software as mentioned is available from the Plus4world archive.
Script Plus may be even burnt into eproms, replacing the 3+1 chips. The Script Plus ROM images can be downloaded as well. - If you don't have a burner, drop me a note. No problem to burn the chips for you.

I wonder, why nobody commented on this. This is pretty uncommon and sounds as if you have a very early model or prototype. Could you post a photograph of your Plus/4s mainboard?
