it's just a small live chatbox that fits in on the side of the site. It's like an instant messaging box which only members can view and contribute in. It's good for general banter or whatever you like. Very popular on lemon64 and it doesn't detract from their forum post count.

It seems to be a part of a site wrapper, so maybe they use Joomla like we do on the C16 site, but sure there's other ways of implementation. True it's not essential, we have an IRC chatroom on the C16 site but we never use it but just because it's not an obvious standout feature. The chatbox is just a fun maybe even useful addon for a bit of live help and banter.
