| plus/4 PSU makes loud sizzling noise...
After 5mins my PSU starts to make a sizzling noise. It's loud enough to make me worry. Do I have to expect a failure soon? Are TED/CPU at risk if the PSU fails while the machine is on? I'd rather not risk anything. Unfortunately, I don't have another PSU here

Well, you shouldn't worry (as far as I'm concerned). The noise must come from the transformator itself, from the coils (to be precise). When the trafo is manufactured, they impregnate the coils with lacquer, so that they become solid and no windings can move. With time (as the trafo heats up / cools down repeatedly), some of the lacquer will break and parts of the coil will get partially loose. Those parts of the windings will move periodically, as soon as applying alternating electromagnetic field... ie. plugging the thing into the mains. Similarly, sometimes the metal plates, of which the transformator core is made, get sometimes loose and make similar noise. Either case, it shouldn't be risky to operate the computer from such PSU.

Thanks for the detailed answer! After that "blown up" filter in that 1551, I started to be careful. Anyway, I'll blame you if anything goes wrong
