 [limiTED] 64bytes/(128bytes/)1024bytes democompo!

Ok that is:
our idea is to start a cool X-bytes compo on C16/+4: prove your skill if space makes you chill!
In the beginning, we'd thought about 2 main categories: 64 bytes demo compo and 1K demo compo. Why? Well, because we wanna have a look at your skills and fantasy, without stealing you too much time. Actually a compo like this:
- takes you a very little time to spend
- can involve much more participants, even from neighbouring scenes
- show you true knowledge of our beloved machine.

You will simply enter your demo here at +4world (we'll have a comfortable page for an easy uploading), then vote in the 2nd phase (or before the deadline, we'll see).

Someome moaned "bah, 64 bytes is actually too little memory". Hence, it's my opinion to listen to your precious hints about it. To me, would be kewl 128bytes/1024bytes compos, (a 128bytes one, as well we had in "4ever'03" party in Szeged, do you remember?).
It would be a little cute compo, but, who knows, maybe a little reward for the winner would be also cool... wink

And now, I really need your opinions!

One question: should these microdemos start with run command? Maybe for 64 bytes it is a big sacrifice, but for 1024 bytes can be done.

Why play by the usual rules? Let's be different and say e.g. 264bytes or ( 16+116+4= )136bytes... something with a meaning to plus/4 sceners happy

Are you planning on making the demos accessable as soon as they are uploaded or wait until a deadline and then present all entries after the deadline and subsequently have a voting phase?

Oh well, you're right, but it would be better to fall within the classic recognizable demo types...

Chicken said:

Heh, you touched a very sensible question: one could download an entry, check it and try to improve, but I think that's not fair. Yes, I have faith in the sceners, but this is a compo in the end, no?
Another good change could be, i.e., to show screenshots only before the deadline, or youtube (et simila) videos...

Actually, I wasn't so much concerned about stealing ideas/code because I think we are all good sportsmen happy

I asked that because I think when someone uploads his demo at an early date and ppl have seen it many times they are not as "surprised" when it finally comes to the voting phase. So I'd prefer a deadline and then a release all entries at once. Then all demos have the same "brand new stuff" factor happy

 Re: [limiTED] 64bytes/(128bytes/)1024bytes democompo!

Rachy+Chicken: hence, not a single little very little screenshot?

Oh anyway: the idea was basically mine, and the .php stuff will be mostly done by Csabo. Now we really need to know who's interested, and I'm pointing the finger to all the lurkers here! wink
Moreover, remember that this compo would encourage you to present your skill in a way that leaves you spare time for SceneCon, that would become a milestone in the +4 scene history (and we're so close to discuss in a forthcoming thread).

 Re: [limiTED] 64bytes/(128bytes/)1024bytes democompo!

No, nothing happy Well... maybe a random byte from the product

I mean, if someone enters a sound demo, a screenshot won't tell anything anyway.

I think it will be "teasing" enough if you announce the name of the participant when he entered the compo. But that's just my opinion... This thread was just opened so there are probably lots of suggestions coming in.

Oh well, to be honest: this thread had been started in order to probe if the interested sceners are 3-4, or if the root idea of catching several others works well.

Ok, atm we have 3 suggests that automatically become rules:
- entries will be shown after deadline
- no SIDcard or other external devices are allowed
- your entry can be run by RUN or direct SYS

What about the memory range? I think in 64/128bytes you don't want to lose any byte because of a setup routine. Does it matter where the code resides? Should it run on 16k machines?

You could simply download YAPE emulator and +4IDE crossassembler, and code your stuff there... Anyway, you can see, the compo has to be officially launched yet (we're so close btw!), hence let's count as minimum a month before deadline since now.

 Re: [limiTED] 64bytes/(128bytes/)1024bytes democompo!

I have a suggestion/request. The demos should be anonymous. This means that they should bear no group logos or credits (or digitized speech that says "Coded by Degauss"). Well, you get the idea. I think this will help 2 ways:

- It will increase the fun factor. In addition to viewing cool new productions, you will also have a chance to try and guess who made them. I'm sure we will all be in for surprises when the names are finally revealed.

- It will decrease the voting bias. In some cases, some people might be influenced to vote higher for a production that was made by someone they like, or rate an otherwise good production lower if they don't like the coder.

Third (but I'm not sure if it's an advantage or not), this may force the coders to present a real message: e.g. the demo should say something that's in line with its feel, and not just "LOD Rulez Forever" and the kind wink. Anyway, I vote we do this. Let's hear the counterarguments.

 Re: [limiTED] 64bytes/(128bytes/)1024bytes democompo!

I think Csabo is right, absolutely.
Did you get ppl? Let's say again:
>>>YOUR DEMO MUST BE ANONYMOUS!<<<
Lemme include this rule then. The official rules are now these.
Rachy pointed out that the one who receive all the stuff, would know the sender! Let's choose between two solutions:
- we will open an /incoming folder with no restrictions in upload where you can anonymously sent all the pr0n do you want to ;)
- one man will receive all the stuff, a man who won't vote, and that man casually is Luca/FIRE :)

...::[limiTED]::...

 Re: [limiTED] 64bytes/(128bytes/)1024bytes democompo!

Oh man

I was just thinking of a cool way to create a HUGE "CHICKEN" logo in 64bytes... An anonymous demo takes away a core ingredient, ie a logo of the author's name.

And a message would tell the author, too. Maybe not in 64bytes but I can tell if a scroller is written by TEK, CSABO, LUCA... :D

What about if it's either completely anonymous or released under a pseudonym that can't be related to the author? Thus, we could include logos. Of course, anagrams are not allowed, eg Luca may NOT participate as UCLA even if fan-wear is available wink

Something else... Is it ok to "expect" certain values in eg $ff19 or the zeropage? Maybe we can say "The demo will be loaded on a machine that was just switched on".

At the moment no 64 bytes democompo has been planned, your 64b marvel will fall into one of the two remaining categories. But if you're a crowd hailing to 64bytes, ask for that and you'll get it!, beware it should be a real plebiscite to achieve that! And that will be our LAST word about compo categories.

But i can understand Mike's question. I also got confused by that. Roeddelroemp for example is 1024 incl the load address - where 1026 would have been allowed (2 bytes, well... i think that wouldn't have been enough to improve that demo alot wink )

Luca, it is not a problem of equipment, I carry my selfmade xdev-system with me all the time (and BTW I can't use YAPE, as I'm DOS and Linux only. Wait, I could try WINE...). It is more a problem of time and energy. Learning Japanese and getting used to the the culture here is quite something for me. I don't feel much like coding right now. Within the next month, this could change however. happy

Anonymous entries are a good idea. I wouldn't even mind, if the one "collector" is allowed to vote.

- what about keeping 64bytes too? it will become a 64/128/1024 bytes, for very hard coders!

Well I think that two are enough to me to let me cancel that rule. So, atm, multiple entries per autor are allowed. The 3rd rules is now:
- you can send one or more entries per any single category

Now there's the very last question: would you prefer a longer compo time and push the deadline away of one week?

A suggestion concerning source-codes and anonymous entries.

I'd suggest to release the voting pack without sources and the final pack including them.

Reason 1) I'd like to have credits in my source
Reason 2) It might be possible to easily guess the coder by looking at the source. (someone else beside me using 'as'? wink)

Thanks for the advice, lemme suggest an alternative location where to find Ultimate Rom Map: look into the temporary folder: here.

Well, I don't need a commented disassembly. A plain ASCII-file with code and data sections seperated would be enough for me. That makes hunting useful patterns a lot easier. (I already got one I know from the C64, but there may be more)

For those that care....I've done a mini-disassembly of the screen clear so you can see what it does. You can find it on my blog.... http://dailly.blogspot.com/

Its better that I thought it was going to be as it hits the screen directly, not through chrout.

Well, I know it's anon, if XYZ says they are still working, I still wouldn't know if they actually submitted one or not. I was just asking if we have to worry about the deadline counter being - apparently - incorrect.

At any rate, if there are any last minute entries, I don't think we'd mind if someone is over the deadline by a few hours or something. I'd rather see more demos than see someone disqualified.

Voting... I'll have to write the page happy I promise to do it as soon as I can. I dunno what will be the actual procedure, we'll see what happens, but please be patient happy

As for the voting itself: is everyone okay with giving scores 10-0 for the demos, and not voting for your own? Or should we do something fancier?

 Re: [limiTED] 64bytes/(128bytes/)1024bytes democompo!

@Csabo:

Probably it would be better applying the usual procedure for demo voting: choose the best, the second best and the third best, which gets 3, 2 and 1 point(s) each, then sum the points for demos.

 Re: [limiTED] 64bytes/(128bytes/)1024bytes democompo!

But what if some demos are of equal quality to me?

I'm ok with just giving 0-3 points but I'd be happier if I can give e.g. two points to several productions.

0-10 is a wide range... maybe too wide? It's harder to tell if something is worth 5 or 6 points, I think. But that's just my opinion.

And sorry for not turning in anything Shame on me... I didn't get beyond thinking about something and some notes. But I'm curious what you guys made out of 64 bytes happy

How about then 3-grade system for each demo: 1 - poor, 2 - good, 3 - superb? Then sum the submitted scores and that is it.

 Re: [limiTED] 64bytes/(128bytes/)1024bytes democompo!

If possible I would prefer the ranking way: simply order your demos by personal ranking from the worst to the best. 12 entries for 64bytes? Then automatically the worst will get 1 while the best 12.
That way, you can have a fine regulated vote with very little effort, avoiding extreme votes (like, e.g. all the demos are crap but this one that takes 1,000,000 from me).

PS: jeez guys, I slept 2 hours only to have that temporary download fixed up at record time, and now I'm at workplace, blasted!
PPS: beg your pardon, I'd forgotten to let you download a one-click complete pack, instead of single files, and I can't to it here. I'll add it when I'll be at home, sorry...

 Re: [limiTED] 64bytes/(128bytes/)1024bytes democompo!

Amazing entries, quite a few jaw-droppers...

Voting: I will add a comments section line, and a place where everyone who wishes can enter a guess as to who made that demo. In the end, we will tally up all the guesses a demo got, and possibly list who were the sceners who correctly identified the author.

My problem with linear voting: I MUST give a one in every category. Maybe I don't want to. And I MUST rank all demos as one-is-better-than-the-other. Maybe I think some of them are equal, and I want to give them the same score. So I'm still voting 10-0 scoring happy How are we going to come to a consensus on this one?

So you (Bionic) got one of those almost-static-RAM plus/4s? wink None of mine works like that but TOXIC's did and I have a C16 that keep everything for at least 5secs.

Some of those protectors were rather tricky... I remember disassembling them when I did some 1551 versions and we discussed that back in the days on the old mailing list. If I recall correctly, TLC did a nice one checking $ff1d/e or so.

Anyway, I saw the clock and I wonder if it can be linked to Osama Bin Ary wink

I thought all Plus/4 had this behavior? The actual memory content in the DRAMS should stay for at least the better part of a second. Are there drams with self reset? weird..

Well anyways, with a 256kb memory expansion you can also add a simple button to circumvent all reset protectors.

Hopefully (or possibly?), there are more. Even though PLUS/4 WORLD is a great place, it's not frequented by all plus/4 users regularly. And some ppl don't get around to vote. See how much trouble Luca has with getting more votesheets for the LONENEWS top lists.

I guess posting (ie advertising) compos on other 8bit related forums/sites would draw some attention.

Still, I'm surprised in a very positive way by this compo: Very well performed (especially the technical aspects and the presentation), enough entries to feel that the scene is alive and 30 people taking their time to check out the demos and vote.

A BIG thank you to everbody involved! And to those who haven't voted, yet... HURRY UP happy

A couple of questions:

Is this going to be an annual event? If so, continue to publicize the results well into 2007 for this years comp. A buzz will build (especially since the demos are so strong!) as people come and go - not everyone surfs the sites on a regular basis, I imagine. Next year it will be even stronger!

Also, how do I register?

The link for the zip file in Luca's post was broken (fixed now).

I'm guessing your browser must have saved the 404 HTML message as an (invalid) ZIP file.

Very interesting and pretty much what I expected, though small differences to my personal preferences exist.

Strikingly, some ppl thought almost exactly the same (see comments). Must be the same CPU inside wink

I should have participated in the "Guess who?"-contest... I'd beat Csabo Cheers, mate! wink I thought that looking at the code is too much "cheating" but some demos just asked for MONITOR... interesting bits. Hopefully, some ppl decide to publish documented sources. That's the best way to learn...

Buona notte happy

Reading the comments and the author guesses is really funny. Csabo, you need to resign, misguessing in a row. Luckly you do coding a lot better... wink

Great demo comp guys - great fun!

A few surprises in there too (for me), I thought some should have been much higher, and some much lower, but great to read every one elses comments. I guess I just look for different things in demos these days (might not bode well for XeO3...oops... ! )

And yeah....It was good to beat Csabo on guessing who did what happy

(I guess next time, those that don't guess...shouldn't be listed! wink )

wow.. this Exin must have been in a really bad mood when writing his comments. Guess he did not consider they would be published with name attached? happy

FYI: 1D Demo II was not that easy to code (took at least two hours, as compared to much less for the other entries wink ) Source is attached. Its the only 64byte demo without rasterbugs!

I agree with indi. It was nice to read the comments. While most of them pointed out the good things about a demo even if it wasn't the commentator's favorite one, a very few comments are rather hurting.

I don't mind criticism but it should be fair and at least constructive. It's ok not to like a demo but nobody needs plain dissing. I guess, in the end those comments speak for their author(s) wink

Chicken: I don't mind criticism but it should be fair and at least constructive.

I was one of the more critical persons...... but I followed the instructions on our news page: Write your personal comments for any entry, glorify the best, insult those which you dislike!

Does this make me Simon Cowell? wink

I spent ages doing mine as well....I guess everyone spent a reasonable amount of time squishing it all down. Doing the demos were one thing, fitting them in to 64/128/1k was something else - and thats what I loved about it!

The smooth stars was over 200 bytes at one point!!

Ah, that was all good stuff! Man, 26 entries and all of very high quality... Kudos to everyone. A thing that still gives me a good laugh is that our little scene flooded more than full page on pouet wink

@Ninja: Your Technomaker rocks!

BTW: I don't think there was any real insulting language. Some comments were a bit too critical (or lacking subtelty).

Thank you! happy I really liked the competition, big respect and thanks to the organizers. I agree that there were a number of interesting releases. Regarding the results, taste differs wink

By the way, for some days now I can't download the stuff from c64.rulez.org. Is this just a temporary problem?

Ok, today rulez.org has the gift of grace, and can be acceded! So you can grab the whole packs with alternative versions sources and all the rest.
Try pushing up you prefer limiTED releases on Pouet too, coz they'd been kicked out when just entered because of rulez.org...
