| Plus/4 - black screen
Hi
Yesterday, I was given (well, for a bottle of whiskey) two machines - one Plus/4 and one C16. C16 powered up just fine (or almost), but the plus/4 just gave me black screen on tv - I mean the TV catches carier signal ok (tunes itself automaticaly) but the screen is just black.
I've read in other threads here that this is probably due to bad TED or CPU so I guess trying those from C16 in plus/4 will give me some idea? But before doing so, I would like to ask what else can be causing this and mainly - is there any way to isolate the problem without using chips from the working C16?
Other question, I said C16 works ALMOST fine - when I power it up, it sometimes give blue border, sometimes yellow and sometimes it's only shades of gray - but BASIC is running ok. Any idea what may cause this?
Thanks Vit Herman

TED is very sensitive, most likely it is dead in that Plus/4. You might give it a check: carefully remove the chip, which is labelled as 7360 or 8360 from the C16, and replace the same chip in the Plus/4. If it started working then the TED is dead. I don't remember whether the processor mounted on the surface or not, you could also give it a try. It is labelled as 7510 or 8510.
I don't know what might be wrong with the C16, it sounds to me as broken TV modulator, but I am really not a HW guy.

1) IMO you should try to put the TED from the Plus4 into C16 (and not the contrary). This save you from possible burn of the working TED by a possible fault Plus4 card.
2) Check the cable and contacts for the color problems of the C16 screen. Are you using a SCART cable or a moduled TV cable?

1) Putting TED from Plus4 into C16 is (and not the contrary) is a good idea, thanks!
2) I'm using RF output (modulated TV cable). I can try checking the contacts, however - the problem occurs only sometimes - and just switching c16 off and on again is enough to produce different colors on the screen, without touching the TV cable.

Tibor, did you check: 1- that's the real broken one? 2- and no other?

Hi
It was CPU, I swapped them between C16 and Plus/4 and now Plus/4 works like a champ and C16 is dead Anyone have an idea where to get hold of CPU?

Quite expensive method because shipping to czech republic from ebay-countries is nasty I'm expecting one working C16 to arrive in few days, but I don't want to leave the other C16 dead, it's kinda sad. Anyone with C16 with bad TED but working CPU willing to part with it?

There was a 8501R1 on eBay UK the other week. It ended at £3.23 and the seller hinted he may have more CPUs of the same kind to sell later. The seller stated he would only ship within UK, but the buyer lives in the US.. I suppose they figured something out.

So the red power light really isn't any clue at all as to whether the Plus/4 will work or not? I've got a few of them here I only tested to that point. Did anyone ever locate a source for those chips?

If there's one part that never breaks on a Plus/4, it's the red light.

Yes, that red light takes some beating!
I've had a similar problem with a recent Plus/4.
Black screen with grey vertical lines.
Doesn't do much else, but the red light still shnes on.
