Although the lower side isn't visinvisible, I guess you could buy one and look it over if you really wanted to 
The freezer is one of the reasons I was asking about what lines could be played with... I did think that if you could force the external lines and bank a ROM in, you should be able to hijack the IRQ vector with a "special" ROM, then take it from there.
The C64 was able to freeze using a cart and then reload without it, so the Plus4 should be able to as well.
