It the command is something like this: >32BC 4C 01 20 then you are meant to enter it either in regular monitor or in an emulator. For regular monitor, you can either do a Run/Stop + Reset after the game is running, and you'll be in monitor, or just type monitor and press return. Then type the cheat as it is. You do this normally when you have a restart address.
If there's no restart address, enter it in the emulator's monitor. In YAPE and VICE, you press ALT+M, then type the line and press enter. Does this help?
