 Re: C16 memory expansion

Wow! happy That's a rip-off wink Well, Hungary was much cheaper back then, partly because we did not have VAT! It was introduced in 1988 only!happy

Gaia, This is about the only price guide I can think of for at the moment for UK. You did well, we payed around double the price for memory and £40 more for a C16.

That will be the TAX man. wink

 Re: C16 memory expansion

I bought my C16 memory expansion around 1987 for about 1500 Hungarian Forints which at that time was roughly 18 British Pounds. I can't judge if it was a lot of money in the UK back then, it was definitely a lot for me wink (the whole C16 costed about 8000, that is, about 95 Pounds at the end of 1985).

@James C
"Otherwise, the C16 or 116 with 64k expansion should be identical to a Plus/4."

No, not exactly. There are hardware differences apart from the built in ROM interface what you also mentioned. For example Plus/4 has a User port (RS-232), while C16 does not.

Anyway if we were talking about the software side then the expansion is enough for any program to run.

@Spector
"Was a memory expansion pack available twenty years ago when the machine first came out, and how much did it cost?"

Yes there was, at least I know 3rd party developments. I used to have an expansion board for my C16, it was built by a hungarian company. Its price was 1/8 of the original machine's price. (Which was huge money for me back then... happy )

 Re: C16 memory expansion

Spector, the Plus/4 would still be superior in my opinion because you can always remove the built-in application's ROMs and substiture something else.... LOGO, Script/Plus, etc., and not tie up the cartridge port.

Otherwise, the C16 or 116 with 64k expansion should be identical to a Plus/4.

To my knowledge, all US-located memory expansions were imported from Europe. I have never seen an advertisement here in the States for a memory expansion, unless it was in a magazine that came from Europe.

 C16 memory expansion

I see that the commodore16.com website is taking orders for a new C16 memory expansion interface that will give the machine the same memory as the plus4. In a way I wish I had a C16 now, because I would have bought one (the C16 is what I had back in 1984).

This prompts me to ask a couple of questions...
Is a C16 with 64K memory the same as a Commodore plus4 in capabilities (if we forget about the business applications the plus4 has)? Or are there other differences between the machines?
Was a memory expansion pack available twenty years ago when the machine first came out, and how much did it cost?
