 Re: Yie Ar Kung-Fu

I beat the C16 version on my first attempt. I found it way too easy, as I demonstrate in my very short longplay video. Sometimes you just have to punch your way through.

Along with the terrible mutiload along with everything else you mentioned, it was an awful conversion. Only Green Beret and Ghosts 'n' Goblins are worse.

Best arcade port on the C16 (imo) is Ikari Warriors. Despite minor niggles, it is what Commando should have been.

 Re: Yie Ar Kung-Fu

@blinddarm, MMS Thank you for the good words!

This game is very special to me, and it took a while to figure out how to present it.
Arcade and C64 version are really great games. The C64 version is a little harder (Pole).
YAKF was my first game i ever played on a homecomputer (C64= and i really love the game.
I really really hoped that the C16 version come near to the C64 version.
I had great expectations, and thats why i really don't like the C16 game.

Even if i try to be fair, the game seems to be rushed out and maybe the developers did not know the C16 very well at that time. Maybe they did not had any interest in making this version and did't put the energy in it.
So everything i say in the video is personal opinion. Many from the UK really like this game.

 Re: Yie Ar Kung-Fu

Thank you for the video! Yeah, a fair comparison happy

I really liked the intro music on C64. When I was a kid, I had it on audio tape too, just able to listen to it without playing the game.

The background of the C16 version is simplier, but still OK, and also animated. It is visaible they took care in the C16 version that the animated characters and the background do not meet happy
Much less animation is available due to the 16K limitation, eg the third enemy is not stepping forward and do not have the nunchaku animation too. Understandable...
Actually the biggest drawback of the C16 version is the slowliness of the animation. In some cases the speed is pretty good, but when the lady throws a shuriken, iit slows down everything, also the jump is pretty slow. This one cannot be caused by memory issues, more a programming. (certainly I know it is a big chunk of software sprite)

Generally speaking, this game did not have me even on the arcade. It is too short, too hard and too annoying for me. Maybe that's why I mainly play with strategic and RPG games grin

 Re: Yie Ar Kung-Fu

Really good comparison for this nice game.
Of course the games for the 264 platform where almost not so good, especially when Developers have to handle with only 16 kB.
Also especially for working without Sprites, or the limited Sound capabilities....
Thanks for this nice comparison....
Regards

My new comparison video of one of the greatest arcade-games of all time. How will the Commodore 16 version hold up against the superior Commodore 64?
