You can do a first test by running the following routine (which comes from the old days  ):
monitor
a0123 lda $01
adc #$38
sta $ff11
jmp $0123
g0123
then press play. You might want to do a cross-test with the good datassette first (so that you can hear how a perfect one should sound like).
Listening to how the unit sounds (if it gives any signs of life, at all) will give you a first pointer on how/what should be repaired.
