There's no magic in it, the ROM contents (i.e. the character sets) are simply different. The left arrow has been replaced by an underscore in the dump we have here online. That's interesting, because it'd suggest that yours are either earlier or later than the dump we have here online. Could you possibly create a ROM dump of it? You could use the program I have posted here on the forum about a year ago.

You may have to alter this a little because it starts dumping from the higher slots and if you have a plus/4 it'll just dump the built-in software.

Works just fine on my NTSC machine and on my 256k expanded machine

It seems that the character "<-" (left arrow) obtaining by [SHIFT]-[=] is not shown if the OS96 roms are installed.
Since in my real machine I have OS92 (where the key works aswell) I discovered this curiosity only by emulators. It should be interesting if somebody could try in the real iron.
