written by jopa 1560 potsdam what is "Potsdam"? Is that a city?
Potsdam is indeed a city. It's located in Germany, near Berlin, our capital city. 1560 is an old zip code of Potsdam (not valid anymore).

| Ahhhh!!!
NOOOOOooooO! I have done that before now, got this game mixed up with Torpedo Alley sorry guys. Csabo after you said about Firebird it got me thinking.........
And being very honest this time both games I never really played, loaded them once and that was enough for me
Ok's this time I get a chance to make that up and here goes the full instructions for Torpedo Run.
Program... Robert Kent and Dave Large Copyright... CITISOFT LIMITED 1985. Produced by... Genesis Design, London
Keys...User Selection Joystick... Left-Right...N.S.E.W Steering Forward...Dive Back...Surface Fire Button... Fire Torpedos
Game Scenario: The enemy have launched several large convoys for a massive attack on your bases, Your mission as a submarine captin is to seek out these convoys and sink as many of their ships as possible. The enemy must be stopped at all costs. Your Torpedo and Fuel capacity is limited but you can retrun to base to replenish these. returning to base is a very hazardous journey. you will have to steer a path through an enemy laid mine field - one touch of any mine will be fatal.
Locating Enemy Convoys: Use your periscope to take a "BEAD" on an enemy ship. You may fire torpedos either from peroscope depth (40 feet) or from the surface. To sink a ship you must hit it in the "AMMO STORE". Hits in other areas of the ship will cause damage but will not sink it. You can finish off a ship by coming to the surface and firing more torpedos, but be careful, the ships will fire back. Sinking ships from the surface will earn extra points. you are safe from enemy fire at periscope depth.
Warnings :- If you are below peroscope depth and your periscope is up, or you submaerge with you periscope up, you will lose your periscope and points. Keep an eye on your oxygen level, if it gets low you must surface to replenish it.
Sorry about that mistake. regards,

Lando, SVS, thanks for replying. However, this is what I haven't heard from either one of you guys: did you actually see an emeny ship **ever** in this game? SVS: No, D must be something else, since "DEPTH" is actually there. For me D always stays on zero. Lando: why did you say "Firebird"? Were they the ones releasing this game?

I think Firebird were ashamed of this one. Out of all the games they released this was the only one not to have any screen shots on the back cover. Instructions are not very good
The game: Take your submarine to sea and sink the convoy of ships. The smaller the vessel, the larger your score tally. Beware. The convoy is protected by an escort of anti-submarine aircraft who once in sight will seal your fate and send you to the sea-bed for good! To aviod this watery end, dive as soon as your hear the aircraft approching, and wait below the surface until you think it is safe to return. Good luck Commander!
Playing the game: Usa a joystick in either port. FIRE BUTTON - LAUNCH TORPEDO PULL BACK JOYSTICK - DIVE PUSH FORWARD JOYSTICK - RESURFACE

| It's many years I played with it,
but if I don't remember wrong: D on screen stands for "Deep" (under sea surface measure) STATUS means the distance from ths submarine and the enemy ship (Green: no enemy ship; Yellow: far enemy ship: Red: near enemy ship AND possibility to view it by periscope. You can have an idea of the distance from the ennemy ship by listening to the sonar inpulse delay (long delay = no ship or far ship, etc.). It's possible the enemy ship is able to detect you, then it change its route to avoid conflict Hoping been useful . Bye

| Update
I've hacked the game a little more. I've added a small routine that displays the value of this $32 zeropage variable. What I found is this: 0-2 = RED, 3-5 = GREEN, 6 and above is BLUE (I've made a mistake about this in the prev. post). The number clearly behaves this way: it decreases when I get near a certain point, and it increases when I get further away from it. By seeing the numbers it actually a lot faster to go to that 'point' than just by looking at the colors. Anyway, once I reach zero, and put up the periscope, there's nothing there...
Also, what is the "D00" variable on the screen for? P is for signaling whether the periscope is up/down, T is number of torpedos, F is fuel... So D must be "Destroyed ships"?

| Hacking Torpedo Run
Okay, so it's not an emulation bug. This got me interested, and I started hacking this game. After disassembling it, here's what I found.
This is *all* the text that's in the game (in the order as it appears in the memory):
score - hi score - left - right - up - down - accelerate - decelerate - periscope - fire - key - press key required - w <<< n <<< e <<< s <<< - you lost your periscope commander! - you hit a mine - jopasoft presents - torpedo run - written by jopa 1560 potsdam - the enemy must be stopped! - press fi to select keys - press f2 to start game - you ran out of oxygen - you ran out of fuel - score - status - time - oxygen - depth - speed.
That's all. Nothing about "you sank that ship"... What's interesting: after must be stopped there is actually an exclamation mark (it doesn't look like one when the game is running). Instead of F1 they typed FI. Also I haven't seen the "You ran out of fuel" message yet. Plus, who is "Jopa", and what is "Potsdam"? Is that a city? Anyway.
Since this didn't help, I started looking at the code. First of all I made a cheat. In YAPE, press ALT+M for monitor, then type >1E89 A9, and voila, the mines are harmless. Then I found that the STATUS on the top (which I suspected had something to do with finding enemies) is changing according to a zero page variable. If it's greater than 6, it's green, which signifies no danger(?). It it's between 3-6, then it's blue which signifies alert (or something). Less than 3 is red. Maybe that's what tells you that an enemy ship is nearby?... Well, that's all I got so far.

| torpedo run
hiya, don't think it's an emulation fault cause I own the original on the c16 and it was exactly the same! just wonder about on the map and basically that's it!, I wonder if there is some one who actually knows? It's puzzled me for so many years!! if u know anyone or anything that would be great! thanx!

| Hmm...
I had trouble finding any emenies in this game as well. I could navigate around, but all I got into was that "minefield" (in which I always got hit). There should be enemies, though. The opening screen clearly states "The Enemy Must Be Stopped". Okay then, but where are they?
I learned the hard way not to use the periscope (default key P) unless the depth is zero (or in other words the sub is on the surface). However, all I ever saw were clouds...
Maybe it's an emulation problems. Sometimes games used a weird way of generating random numbers - so maybe in this case that's why we never encounter any enemy ships... Who knows...
