 Re: limiTED2 - official thread

Summarizing:
a) Austrospeed can run FOR with integer variables;
b) If you have an integer STEP, then a good speed increment is obtained
c) if you store a decimal value (like 1.47) into an integer variable, the value is rounded and stored as integer (1.47 is stored as 1; 1.53 is stored as 2). Following operations of course will use *that* rounded value.

 Re: limiTED2 - official thread

Few months back I tried that A% in the FOR routine, after you mentioned it in post. At that time I got error message. I did not pur more efforts on that, I though I just missed to read some "basic" info.
Now I just read again a Hungarian book from Ury Laszlo, and well described the setting for normal variables like A%, like A%=2. In fact, your example is exactly I mentioned, that if at the setting you use a pont (.) or after an operation it generates a non-integer, the A become floating point too.

Any idea, how to do it then? Or you just confirmed with this post that it does not work to speed up the FOR routine in this way?
Anyhow Austro did it's task, but I respect and thank any comment how I can speed up BASIC code (it is sometimes really slow happy )

 Re: limiTED2 - official thread

@MMS

Not exactly, every variable is floating point typed if you didn't specify the % (integer) or the $ (string) postfix. Like:

A=12.3
PRINT A

Result is

12.3

A%=12.3
PRINT A%

Result is

12

But oddly you cannot specify explicitly integer variable at the FOR iteration:

FOR A%=1 TO 10

causes syntax error. I don't know why.

On the other hand, using explicitly integer typed variable isn't faster at all, according to my experiences. It is even slower... (Most likely because of processing the extra character in the name of the variable.)

 Re: limiTED2 - official thread

Hi, tanks for the hint, I will try it.
But if I remember well, if I do not use "." or "-" signs, then the BASIC3.5 interpreter wil treat it as integer. Or the Austrospeed works differently?

 Re: limiTED2 - official thread

Hi SVS,
It was just a pure BASIC, nothing special. (the Greet you can download from LimiTED2)

Sure, the running code in the compiled program need some space. I can confirm, that the FOR routine became much faster. (although if it would be 3x more faster than the end-result, would have a similar speed as a bady written ML code happy)

 Re: limiTED2 - official thread

@MMS:
(if anyone interested, I tried Autrospeed: effect became ~3-4x faster, but 10x bigger)

I'm interested in: was your source in Basic? Or did you included ML code inside a compiled Basic-loader?
(P.S. the code is bigger because of the Austro runtime routine)

Special thanks to you spending a complete page on me, despite of memory limit... happy

BTW, only one question: how my little greet became 99 blocks on the disc? OMG, it was only 4 when I sent it happy
It would be even more lame to spend 99 blocks on such a simple code...

 Re: limiTED2 - official thread

First of all, I also want to thank the organizers (and especially Luca) for doing this event again. It has been very nicely executed and we even have this "resultro", great work.

About my entry and the similarity to "Borderless": It looks the same, but in fact, it is quite different technically. Actually, the sine effect is more or less only there to present the underlying technique to cross the border. On the C64 it meant setting up _sprites_, stretch them while removing sideborder and such. For the C16, it meant to find out how to get a constant _idle byte_ (or ghostbyte as it is called on C64). So, quite different approach, especially as the latter one seems to have never been used before. The only thing that was reusable was a skeleton of the BASIC sine generator which doesn't look too different from the other entries, after all happy

bubis: Yeah, the ghostbyte is available on VIC, too. I was pretty sure the TED works very similar regarding idle cycles (I mean, what should it do else, it has to read something). That idea was in my head since limiTED1, I just never took the time to play around before.

ian_coog: BTW, it is not half the size, but 83%. Then again, it is hires resolution and half the code size, FWIW.

gaia: I think the flickering in YAPE is because the byte from $ffff is latched (at least) one cycle too early. Could this be true? I could write a small test routine for that next week.

Thank you guys!

And thank you for the organizers too.

@bubis

Well, you know: the most compact way of writing code is BASIC. Too bad that it is sooo slow to execute. happy
BTW, in this particular category of demos, when the code must be ultra-compact, Plus/4 has lot more potentials than the C64, because of the advanced ROM routines.
