IF YOU OPENED UP

a commodore magazine
at the end of the 80s

you might have seen something like this:

TOP LIST (C=64)
Tir Na Nog - 1985
Head Over Heels - 1987
Stunt Car Racer - 1989
Impossible Mission - 1984
Bard's Tale - 1985
Arkanoid - 1987
Laser Squad - 1989
Dizzy II - 1989
One On One - 1984
Bobby Bearing - 1986
Green Beret - 1986

Awesome games!

Can we
(C=16 and C=plus/4 owners)
play them?

NO

We did have some real gems:

Tom Thumb, Summer Events, Winter Events
by Udo Gertz

Icicle Works, Fingers Malone, Prospector Pete
by Doug Turner

Bandits At Zero, Kikstart, Trailblazer
by Shaun Southern

Rescue From Zylon, The Magician's Curse, Enigma
by Mark J Moore

but we also had many games
that are "less than stellar".

(thai boxing)

and all those C=64 games?
forget it.

IN 2025

WAIT A

DID WE
MISS ONE?

WHERE
IS MY
BERET?

(green beret shown)

this looks really terrible. it is best forgotten.

HOW COME
NO ONE
CONVERTED
THIS ONE
FROM C=64?

let's see if we can rip out the levels...

would you look at that!

we're halfway done already!

right?

NO

the big problem is obviously
SPRITES

to use software sprites
we have to reserve about
half of the 256 characters
used by the C=64 map.
we also can't mix
hires and multi.
and the colors must
be completely rethought.

in fact,
this is true for
all parts of the game:
aside from a few
graphical assets,
nothing
from the C64 original
is useful.

perhaps a
similar game
could be coded
from scratch,
but no one
is crazy enough
to attempt that...

right?

right?...
