I would save the highscore saving for the retail version only, as a bonus feature for buying it.
If there was ever a chance to get the game on tape the first thing I would say would be to drop the highscore saving. The second thing I would say is thank you for releasing it on tape. The tape would be for personal use to save wear on the floppy drives and the disk version would be for special occasions when friends come round. Disk for showing off!
