We are kind of settled with the 1551 transfer routine. The fastest version worked at 1 byte / 19.5 cpu cycles but that was too complicated, so we decided to use another one that is half cycle slower. Drama! 
Drive detection is also done in theory.
Now, I have to put the pieces together and create the next release, and first of all, test it properly!
BSZ will develop a block saving routine too what you can upload to drive memory using Bitfire routines. (You can't use kernal routines while Bitfire is installed in drive memory.)
