The cardboard shield was used originally to support the FCC Part 15 compliant (Class B Digital Device) rule where home electronics had to be prevented from interfering with Radio and TV reception.

In today's Digital world it's the mobile phone that is the main cause of any interference you may get with Radio and TV signals, (if a phone is placed too close to such equipment) from incoming text messages...
