I know that smell as I have a 1531 like that which has the original smell. It was and is like brand new as I only use it for "playing" tapes when making the odd backup and for a couple of very sort after C64 tapes that in my opinion can only be used on something this new as they are sort of rare, valuable and mean a lot to me... 99.9% of the time this 1531 is kept in it's original bag'n box and this is how the smell has been preserved for so many years as with your C16.
So if you want to preserve the smell of that C16 then you know what to do. Put it back into it's box and only take it out for very special occasions.
