PWM with IBM PC speaker uses exact time interval to set up the volume of sound - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC_speaker#Pulse-width_modulation. Thank you for the reference to TLC results but I could only find information about 4-bits sound. TLC wrote about PWM too...
