Actually, on the 1541-II the drive activity is green, too. The 1551 (and the regular 1541) is the other way round. The idea back then was being able to quickly identify the drives we booted up with (esp. when you're not on a 1541).
SVS: wouldn't you expect problems when hot-pugging real drives without switching them on/off first? It kinda works under emulation but leaves the ports at an undefined state. Could be fixed but...
