I seem to recall it was more reliable with the original 1541 drives and less so with the 1541 II's but that could have been coincidence (I thought it was just duff disk images until it eventually worked one day.)
My office is mainly full of disassembled cbm-ii's and PET's at the moment, but when moon next moves into the star sign of 264 i'll try and check if there's a pattern.
