??? I thought this was an emulator forum, not a hardware forum! 
I see nothing unusual about an 8501 being made in Hong Kong. I just took a peek at my reserve chips, and found 1 8501 made in HK and one from Taiwan. My 8360 reserves are all marked Taiwan on the underneath.
