I think the main point about a bitmap-playfield is:

You surely save some cpu time for scrolling and maybe the plain drawing of the sprites is faster as in character mode, but restoring the graphic-area that has been covered with sprites is so expensive that you are going to loose all those benefits (in my opinion).

Another drawback is that you don't have the possibility to use "Not-Really-Softsprites" for Bullets (or Enemies in Boss-Fights!?) in Bitmap-Mode: You cannot draw a Bullet-Graphic with one STA on the screen. (Like: You can theoretically only have one eigth of Bullets on the Screen - bad for a shoot'em up game wink)
