I guess your routine must work like FAST mode on the ZX81. If you switch the screen off and on fast enough it is suitable for some games, like chess etc.
If anybody is interested in the ZX81 then please download my Java emulator (excuse the plug!).

switching off the screen during complex calculations, this might not be suitable for games, however.
