Given that the 6523 seems to fail on almost all machines giving the Device not present error message I was wondering if another IC could be made to do the job because replacement chips seem to be unavailable. I was thinking in terms of a 6522 or 6526 or etc. I know they are not pin for pin compatible ... With a socket and a plug in "daughter" board and maybe some "glue" chips ...
