Thanks again for the update. Still looking forward to it being released and hope whatever the issue might be it gets resolved soon.

If they have the man power then maybe they should look at ebay as an alternative. Selling fee's can be added on as a way of providing that unique service. wink

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

And another perhaps not really needed update about the state of the game. It's submitted and Kenz from Psytronik assured that it will be deliverable before November (some months ago). However it seems his site is currently down because of a huge demand of some good "other platform" games, the binary zone shop is somehow closed currently because of that. I hope he manages to provide the game around November but I am really not sure about this currently.. So yeah "Pets Rescue" could take some time to appear in the shop.. So that's the news from here.. Hope everything is alright with this.. happy

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

Hey Plus/4 people..

good news.. We are in the final testing phase of the commercial version of our game Pets Rescue. Main improvements are a (can I say much here?) more fluid framerate. A complete world added consisting of 4 new levels (with new shiny themes by Kichy and additional levelsongs by Luca and 5tarbuck). And a new per level password system. If you have time to play it, it should now be possible to reach the final scene of Pets Rescue even if you lost many lives in the non commercial version and couldn't finish the noncommercial version. I hope we can ship this version soon, however in the past it took a longer time after submitting the game to Psytronik till it is available to the people. I hope the final cover artwork will arrive in time, since we saw already a great great preview for it (done by Psytronik artist Smila). So stay tuned, and perhaps within the next 2 or 3 months the game is available through Psytroniks online shop. Hope you didn't got upset, by all the time for it flowing by already.

Have a nice week! happy

Imagine if I made a video about the game 1942 and I put the tape in and it doesn't load - ah well at least the instructions say it was out on C16...
Luca would want to murder me and rightly so for not trying hard enough!!

Well spotted on the NTSC issue and hope you find a fix! I see and understand your point Mad, but did you also see the amount of lubrication that was smeared over the Plus/4, 1551 and the 1341? That was SUPER shinny!
All that effort and no joy from the stick..., maybe he used too much polish! wink

and yeah, I have said it was a good plug for your awesome game and again, I said the 8bit Guy liked it which is all that matters and why Luca posted it in the first place. happy

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

MIK perhaps it also was a happy coincidence that his joystick "didn't work". You can see on the startscreen some scroll bug on his NTSC plus/4. Up there on the screen top is shown some wrong "chars". I am not sure how to fix this, perhaps someone here knows more about this issue. Perhaps it would've been shown all the way through the levels. Wouldn't be the best publicity. I just checked the NTSC stuff in yape and plus/4 emu where there are no errors at all with the NTSC version. Another point would be that the NTSC version could be more stuttery if he shows it to the people. We increased the performance to some margin for the (not finished) commercial version, but the free version perhaps would stutter "a lot" in NTSC mode.

Perhaps it's not a big fail by him, even if it looks like a fail. At least he said that the game is a good game, and I am happy with this.. happy You know some older games (Zador/MoS) got some harsh comments about the scrolling. Some people really did believe that the plus/4 has no softscroll registers. And happily this was under the first things he said about the plus/4 in this video. It was a big relief to get rid of this burden for me. It was somehow a meltdown for me, that people thought the plus/4 couldn't scroll propperly.

A happy new week from here! happy

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

I may sound a bit harsh but still it's 2018, not 1998. Most people with a real passion for a hobby would take pride in what they are doing to make sure everything is working... His C64mini video is a classic as he spends a while showing people how his DVI to HDMI cable 'doesn't' work when all people want to see is the machine working! Hang around long enough and you just might. grin

The game has been out over a month now. He could of imported an adapter and it might of arrived in time. He could of even replaced the joystick cord so soldering was done in the joystick but in reality ebay has been around for a very long time now and could of grabbed a spare.

Was he lying? Maybe not as most people would say the stick was broken soon after it was used when brand new. It's a nice plug for the game so a pat on the back for that, and he likes it which is all that the designers could ask for. Just a shame he's in too much of a rush to make the video instead of doing a little homework first, "I've found a power-up but don't know what it does". wink

Run on Shift/Lock wasn't a request, it was a joke. Just an example that run has been seen before on our systems. Another one is Squirm. I can just imagine though that some might try to play it like Big Mac grin

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

GeTE thanks for your post. I do understand the need for a cassette version, that's not the problem. I commented earlier to MIK that it's not possible to do a cassette version. The game will consist of nearly 126 files in the final release. And we even load several files whilst playing the game. Cassette games normally consists of below 10 files which can be load one after another. Think about rewinding the tape all the time whilst playing the game and remembering around 126 cue points, it would not be playable at all.

Lavina
Uh.. :) You played it this far without running enabled. That's unbelievable. We (most probably) will add an obstacle in the first level which can only be overcome by running. Wasn't aware of this problem.. Will be part of the commercial release. Good point.

MIK
Good point. But I think this shift lock thingy takes to many bytes most probably above $20 bytes. If I can free some more bytes I wanna spend them for other stuff (remember we have some new levels in the commercial release).

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

As commented already, in my Opinion even the full commercial edition should get a tape (compact cassette) version with it. So many plus/4 and C16/C116 were sold as edutainment box in germany with datassette only and maybe all these were nether upgraded. But the boxes still resting in many homes. I would be great to trigger all these families to revive their old computer with a game directly starting out of the box.

And even tapes are becomming harder to get but it's easier than flloppy disks. There are customizer left that make tapes in the necessary length. Only with tape quality 'normal' but that's exactly what we need for the datasette.

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

Hey people! We did cancel the SD2IEC port. It didn't work out.

Now we are working on the commercial version which will take some months.
If I remember right Slipstream took around halve till a full year to beeing released after submitting it to Psytronik.
I have no clue how fast it will go this time.
One main point is the cover art. And there are some other places where we will improve the game.
Let's see if we get all this done in time. Hope it'll all work out.

ps: Please remember to use the "run" joystick button when playing the game. Without it, you'll have an too extreme difficulty level.

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

Doug, since I am using a pretty outdated and extremely simple assembler (dasm) I just wanted to add the Knaecketraecker to your personal "wishlist". It's a perfect tool if you need games with music and sound effects, it features a 3rd "voice" as a mixin into the normal 2 voice based musics. If you just need musics then perhaps also take a look at TEDzakker, which has more specials to offer for musicians, albeit just the two voices the ted supports natively.

In the past we used exomizer2 as cruncher. But now it's bitnax (some derivate of the doynamite packer by doynax) included in the bitfire loader framework.

Exomizer2 has an "sfx" option which you can use to directly start a crunched program with just "run" from the prompt.

I suggest using this "resample to monitor frequency" and "quality:3" setting of plus4emu. So you have a nice and fluid scrolling emulation even at 60Hz monitor frequency.

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

Doug, plus4emu is by far the most faithful emulator you can run, but you can couple it with the most used one, which is YAPE, also faithful and much more friendly.
All my code has been written in the Plus4IDE environment since years, so I would suggest you that one.

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

Hi Doug,

As for cross-assembler I would recommend
- The Macroassembler AS
- Kick Assembler

Both have advanced macro/scripting features. The first has no linux binaries but easy to compile, the second is Java based.
CC65 is great too, of course. I like AS because I can generate most of the data I need with the assembler too.

As for emulator on Linux you will like Plus4Emu. You will need to compile the emu, it has very good documentation but search for the necessary apt-get installs here for a quick start.
Vice's xplus4 will do it too at the beginning, but it only has basic TED emulation.

Contact me on Skype (andras.dotsch) or (Facebook) Messenger if you have any questions.

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

For comprehensive guide I'd suggest SVS' Ultimate Map. Csabo has a lot of his stuffs' sources published which could give hints about coding, although he's using a different assembler. There are some other available sources like the runtime routines of IstvanV's tools in the plus4emu package, or the recently released source of the sprite routine used in Pets Rescue, or the swift disk loader library ported by bubis and BSZ called Bitfire. And there could be found some other assembly sources here and there written by other users with varying degree of usefulness.

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

Its toe in the water time .. I am looking for any advice on decent development tools & environments.

I am running Manjaro (basically Arch) Linux, so there's lots to pick from.

I'm sadly lacking any real h/w, so it emulation only at present. I'm running VICE which seems OK for now, but I'm not sure what the best emulator is. VICE seems to stuggle with Pets Rescue, which is not a good sign. What's the preferred emulator round here? [EDIT : answered my own question - just built plus4emu, and its great. I can get on with this. And Pets Rescue works!]

I've kicked the tyres on cc65 (and associated bin-utils), and it seems well up to the job. The assembler seems fairly fully featured, and I like that I can code in C if I want. What do others use? I'm not a big fan of IDEs, so traditional makefiles, vim, cc/as equivalents etc is just fine by me. Anything better than cc65 I should look at?

I am going to start digging around for tech ref material on TED and the Plussy - I'm sure there's stuff on this site somewhere. I need to remember all that stuff I've forgotten.... oh, and some idea for a game would be good too, but that's always the hard part. happy For now I'll settle for getting familar with the C= world again.

Though I'm much more into demos than games when it comes to 8 bits, but I must say that

1) Life would not be the same without these games (and demos) from Bauknecht (and TEK)
2) I'd give one of my kidneys for a new game from Doug. It would be something like a mind blowing time travel to the times when after school I was sitting inside a bush in the park with a Casio Western Bar that I got from a friend for 30 minutes for an ice cream... And once at home I sat down to the Plus4 and loaded Prospector Pete or Icicle Works. :) Yeah, all time favorites for me, too. Of course back then I never thought that I would ever be able to say thanks to the creators, so yes, THANKS, Doug!!!

Mind .... blown!

This is quite simply an amazing achievement. Well done to all contributors. I spent some very fun time playing this beauty, and I must admit, trying to figure out how the effects were done! I loved the parallax scrolling - exquisite, and a nifty trick. The work on the sprites - both the graphics and the coding - is just awesome. That's some pretty trick code! If only this game had been available back in the 80's, I think the history of the Plussy would have been a bit different. This exceeds anything I've seen done on any hardware of that era. Well done, you have my total admiration!

Thanks for letting us know it can't be put on tape, totally understandable. The loading is so fast and awesome that you don't even notice how many files it has to load for each stage!

EDIT:

1-3: Hedgebourne. Not really an issue as the stage is almost complete..., sometimes the second battery power up on the stage does not always activate when you pick it up.

Hey MIK thanks for your input.. Much appreciated. A Cassette version is very unlikely to happen. We load on many many places in the game. The game consists currently of 98 files. For instance many files are load if you loose a live. We had to do this because the mainmemory is filled to the maximum and there are many files to load in the game anyways. Let's see if a SD2IEC version will happen and if it's fast enough. A Casette version is very unlikely to happen, as said before.

Mad,

I would save the highscore saving for the retail version only, as a bonus feature for buying it.
If there was ever a chance to get the game on tape the first thing I would say would be to drop the highscore saving. The second thing I would say is thank you for releasing it on tape. The tape would be for personal use to save wear on the floppy drives and the disk version would be for special occasions when friends come round. Disk for showing off! wink

Lavina I think Paralax will put it later online.. So your help would be much appreciated. Keep in mind that it's most probably a around 45 min interview. Do you really want to translate this? I hope I did understand right what you wrote, if not np at all.. :)

Today I got in contact with Siz perhaps an SD2IEC version would be possible.. Let's see happy Hope he finds some time for this happy..

edit: I think the 1.53 gb zip from the 03.03 on the download page here is the whole video.. http://www.radio-paralax.de/downloads.html

edit2: It's in part2.mp4 of the .zip. But my voice is hardly understandable..

Just if someone should be online.. I will be in some minutes (21:00) in Paralaxes Radio Show on twitch.io..
https://www.twitch.tv/radio_paralax should be the link..
Don't expect me to be too photogen and a higthlevel media person..

It was in german.. Somehow the download will be available soon..

edit: I tried to build a kernal loading version this evening. It didn't work out. Mainly because we just have $200 memory for loader and cruncher together and because the kernal modifies a lot of memory locations that must be saved and restored after loading. The highscore saving also wouldn't work this way. If anyone knows how to get the start address of a loaded programm after it got load, that would be a nice information for me. Dunno if I try this again. This kernal loading madness caused to much problems in all the games already. Perhaps there is somewhen a better solution for this. Dunno. A good day for all. Cu!

That HoF-System is beginning to annoy me. I really don't know how that double entry could have happened. Maybe someone made an entry for me while I was doing the same? Anyway, please delete the one with the date of today because I made the score (and screenshot) yesterday.

No problem. Nice idea about changing the buttons when playing it on emulators, just don't get too used to it if your planning on playing the game on real machines. wink

Edit:

Something that might be of interest on 2-1: Winterbank?
I have smashed 2 bricks out of the right side of the brick platform on the right. What might not be obvious is that I have carried this power-up from 1-3: Hedgebourne. If the bricks above the lift were one block higher I could jump and smash them. Extra hidden coins in these bricks above the lift would be unfair..., but something else might of been cool for those good enough to make it. wink

As a bit of fun I recreated 1-1: Merrowmeadow...

Edit:

I hope those that got to see the video enjoyed what the first level of Pets Rescue might of looked like in the world of Mario...
Sadly I felt the need to delete the video with-in a day or two as Nintendo are very funny about footage of their games being uploaded to Youtube. Youtube's so called algorithm thought it was Sonic All Stars Racing from the title but it didn't take long for it to work out it was Mario Bros. It didn't know it was a Wii U though did it ha! I didn't want Nintendo knocking the door any way.

But yeah it was just a bit of fun, more so for the Plus/4 All Stars to see.
Cheers!

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

Thank you for all the hints MIK, I can say you surely have a point there: we're aware of the weirdness here at the bottom of the rope, and we decided to leave it as it is, because its fix would have been risky and possibly it wouldn't fit in memory in the very end; being not a real hindrance to the gameplay, we've left that way happy

Yes, that's what we love to hear: there's so much to discover in the game that the player's score changes drastically by discovering more secrets and gaining experience by learning more about any level! Oh anyway MIK, you're the founder, you're largely allowed to enter scores and picture and whatever by yoursef, if you want to grin

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

Lv 1-4, I'm sure you may already know. Coming back down from the clouds can be a bit temperamental. Sometimes you can climb down straight away and it's clean, other times it looks like your stuck and can't get down. If it looks like your stuck try climbing back up the bean stalk and get Dree to jump straight up in the air, from that you might find it easier to get back down.
Just some idea's I was thinking about with the bean stalk.
Would it help if Dree did not automatically change to the climbing down animation at the top of the bean stalk but in stead only changed when you pulled down on the joystick? Also, at the bottom of the bean stalk have you tried removing the section of beam stalk that touches the ground so it hangs in the air like Donkey Kong Jr.? You would then need to jump to grab it, that may stop Dree being in the climbing position when you want to be stood on the ground?
Just some idea's any way. If your looking for a few bytes of memory, the amount of coins in the clouds could be reduced? Regards,

I'm not going to keep posting scores as there are many more levels and things are always changing the more I find in the game! I'll make this the last for now..., I stupidly forgot some coins on one of the stages so my score could of been 15k+ higher at this point in the game lol.

Played on YAPE 1.1.5 using a Cheetah 125+ Joystick.

PS. Tyrex if you need an image host try this one. It will give you shorter links to copy: https://ctrlq.org/images/

@Luca: Why not update the forum software to enable image upload by normal users? Or make it possible to register as a normal user. Plus4Word excludes non-members from uploading. And if i'm right, you need to have some reputation to become a member. Apparently this site does not want normal users to upload anything. And I don't know of any way to post the image from another URL other than by creating an account at yet another social media site. Which is something I don't want to.

I love how the pattern of some bad guys can change the harder you push, like a bad guy might be out of the tube and fire sooner so you have to change your play. Very neat! happy

The fact it remembers what you kill and collect is also cool as well, it so easily could have been a reload and restart all over again every time you die type game. Thank the makers for that feature! wink

As for the Bitfire on SD2IEC question: Short answer is that it is theoritically possible, but none of us have the bandwidth to do it. It would require a special firmware anyways.

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

Ok! I talked to Bubis one who knows BSZ and is from the group Resource, too. They did the conversion of Bitfire from C64 to Plus/4. We use this IRQ loader in the game on every occasion where the loading takes place. As a simple conclusion he said that it's not possible to port the loader to the SD2IEC firmware. I think the problem is the directory which holds all the informations about track sector positions of the files. But I could be mistaken. Don't remember the real reason, why it's not possible to update the SD2IEC firmware there. Perhaps it's the timing of the loading or some other reason. Anyways I think there will be an answer of some of the people who know more! But keep in mind, that it also would put a burden on their shoulders, and even on C64 there is no possibility to load with Bitfire from the SD2IEC. So most likely it's not possible.

Just tried the game - wow! It is amazing what you have managed to squeeze from the machine.

I just find it too hard, especially when you can't continue playing where you died.

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

It's taken 30+ years to see a game like this on 264 so it's crazy why some people are in a rush to see it 'all' without even properly playing it?!?! That slight added difficulty over other systems was always the 264's strength, the games lasted longer and if they were good you got a lot more out of them in the long run! Replay value means a lot to me, like a good movie you don't want the beautiful journey to end but your still be watching it for many years to come!

If people want super easy, there are plenty of levels that people create in Super Mario Maker on Wii U that require no need to play! You just sit, watch and waste moments of your life in the process lol.

Hey that's not true! I've never opposed the password system, I simply believed there was a single level's password system and when I've understood that was different I've simply asked about it! grin

Ok here we're aiming to share a platform game which wanna be played for...mmm, let's say: from 10 days of hard playing to 45 days of relaxed and delayed one happy I used to describe me as a decent player overall, but not a champion, and I reach with no particular difficulty World 3, from where the hard stuff seriously begins. But having the Worlds' password, you can learn how to solve a 4 levels world in one session, and try to pass it in the next ones, with no hurry in searching for all the secrets. Once solved the 20 levels and sodu afyhpuiw egasdfpiuq wehf weui dwdwwf (eh nope, no spoiler happy ), you can get back and search for all the oooooooh why am I explaining this? You all loved doing that kind of stuff since the 16 bit consoles era! grin

What we really hope is that all of you have fun while trying to defeat those nasty levels, putting the bar between frustration and compulsive gameplay wink So have fun, vote for us here, on Poüet, everywhere, and enter your scores here in the Hall of Fame!

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

Yes we know about the topic with the difficulty level! That's an extremely valid point to me. But as Kichy said, we all are noobs when it comes to the creation of levels. Since I personally do like the player to reach very far in a game (If I made the levels and assets on my own, I want the players to see that. So the games actually get too easy), but Kichy did a good job in designing real challenging levels. I know he likes games that are hard to beat (At least that was my impression). For me it's a good thing that we had some good level designer this time. But we have to take care of this in the future (I think).. If you manage to complete level1-4 you will get a password for the next 4 levels. This password per world approach was actually choosen by all in the team agreeing to that (ah I remember, Luca was opposed there). We don't have the space for more passwords currently anyways happy.. Let's see if some tough soul somewhen will say to have it completed. I would prefer some easier levels in the future, too, but dunno if and how we will build another game!

So to say me personally learnt to manage the hard difficulty in the process of making this game, but you cannot expect that from everyone. True and very good point, thanx a lot! Let's wait for Kichy here! happy

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

@Kichy: I'll try to do like you suggest. But the term "nasty" fits well for the game's overall difficulty. It's certainly much more difficult and unforgiving than e.g. Sam's Journey. The fact that you get the first password not earlier than after five (?) stages does not help either. I did not get one yet as I also could only get to World 1-4 so far.

Re: New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

Please ignore what I said about reversing the end of level bonus order on stage 1-2. I assumed I would be 'jumping' down as I do to get the 3k bonus. There was me thinking that it might make it more challenging..., looking again there is no real need to jump to get the 1k, my bad. Sorry!

If there is any memory, the password feature could be used to add the more common cheats like unlimited lives or to activate a level skip button. Such things should not be shared until the physical release is more established. wink

I agree and this is also true for Mario, these games have a habit of killing you from your own silly mistakes, not because they are hard to play but because you were rushing. This is why I have only reached level 1-4 so far, I'm trying to find and collect everything and making silly mistakes. All my fault! happy
A nice joystick or controller can also help. I tried it on Yape last night with an Arcade Stick and I was flying like a PRO on level 1-1 & 1-2. It plays really good on joystick also. I did try a control pad but found it tricky for quick jumping, it is not natural to have jump on UP with a control pad ha!

What I have seen in level design so far is very good for a cartridge style game that runs on Disk, maybe Tape also?! happy
If you guys ever make another game like this, a Nintendo 3DS and a copy of Super Mario Maker might come in handy as you can create, play and tweak for idea's in real time before ever touching a Plus/4. wink

New Plus/4 game to be out this weekend!

Did you remember that some months ago Mad/BKN had ignited this thread? And that in the end of August, he'd written that a possible game conversion has turned into a M4r10 style game coding from scratch? Heh, I know you completely got the point here wink

After 9 months of painful but passionate pregnancy, that famous game will be released at the BCC#12 party to be held in Berlin this weekend: Mad will be physically there to present the game, probably while competing in a dedicated compo of which still ignore the name, this saturday night 24/02. Hence, the game will be up and downloadable between saturday and sunday wink He's the starter of all this and coder, KiCHY designed some fantastic game's maps and backgrounds, me as Luca did the sprites and some tunes, 5tarbuck got in charge for the general musical score, Carrion delighted all of us with the main logo and one of his incredible works of art as title bitmap, Degauss joined too with additional music and even Nero helped with graphics.

Needless to say that we are really REALLY satisfied with the global result: all the game lies in one disk's side, with various complemental stuff (intros, outro, titles...) surrounding the core of the matter: 20 colorful levels of pure platforming in Mar...in Giana's style grin Plus somebody that bad to wait you in the very end. Beg your pardon but let me speak bold: Mad forced the Plus/4 to a further jump in the machine's possibilities, some developed solutions are a must see; and KiCHY made the game soooo darn lovely and colorful! Oh and nasty, sometimes grin
A Psytronik commercial version of the game is TBA soon (with cover by Carrion, one man one warranty of classy stuff!), probably with one or two bonus levels on extended disk (because even this freeware version has completely filled a D64 till the last block grin ).

Hope you'll be with us waiting for this game's release, now that the Commodore Plus/4 too will gain its own Giana's: she's Dr. Andrea Brown, she loves music, she takes care of all the puppies in the city, she wanna set'em all free!
